It's in German but there are a lot of good points made in this article. Some of the descriptions are pretty horrible. Women crying to the police with their clothes ripped off. Definitely the police didn't do enough soon enough. Already at 7 pm on New Year' Eve, the front of the train station was full of these men, and they were throwing fireworks into the crowd of people. It seems they were left alone and as the hours went by, more people came home on the trains and had a very hard time getting through the crowd. By 9 it was a disaster but when the police arrived, they couldn't or didn't clear the whole area, and between 9 and 1 am was when the most rapes and attacks occurred. Even to "older" women. The police finally cleared the place at 1 am.

There is a lot about the way the media handled this ghastly situation thereafter. Only the local news got the info out to the rest of the world at first. There seems to have been a concerted effort to keep this out of the major press.

I apologize for the mess in my post where all the umlauts turn into gibberish on FreeRepublic. I don't know how to fix it.

The timeline is something I’ve wondered about. If it happened over a span of six hours, with the most intense assaults and crime spanning three or four hours, then that is a colossal failure by the police. I saw an article earlier that hinted the police withheld information in order to avoid justifying the “xenophobes”. I can see that being the case for the media, but I think the police are just trying to hide their incompetence.

That is one part of the article. But it’s saying that some of the same exact kinds of attacks happened on New Years Eve in Zurich, Switzerland as well. I know the city well and this saddens me.

My translation:

One of the more unbelievable parts of the episode is that the Koln cops would have had a reserve police force around to help on evenings like this. Well....their reserve force wasn’t in Koln....they were in Bavaria because of the inflow of refugees coming into the country, and Bavaria’s demand for more cops there to help control the mess.

They’ve got four weeks before Fasching season starts up in Koln. Either the German military has to be called in, or the reserve cops brought back....otherwise, if I were a resident of the city and thinking about going to the parades or parties during Fasching....I’d decline and just stay home. It would be a massive public relations mess for Merkel and the politicians in Berlin....if a quarter or third of the normal crowds for the parade...just don’t show up.
