Still thinking on which Dickinson character that might be. In some ways it is similar to Pip’s benefactor in Great Expectations - but the temperament of personality is not agreeable. Dickens showed the character to be totally rough, not filed around the edges. But in his heart he was found to be a somewhat likable, loyal guy - you had to search for it. The two have their gold stash which might be considered. Will give this puzzle more mulling time.

Dickensian character????

Trump lives in London and has a British accent?

Nah, he'd be Zephaniah Scadder in Martin Chuzzlewit, an American agent who sells a malarial swamp development called Eden to young Martin Chuzzlewit. He takes pleasure in getting the better of the British rubes. (Eden is thought to be Cairo, Illinois, which Dickens saw)

Good for Stallone!

Few people appreciate Trump's Dickensian childhood.

One of the Cheeryble Brothers.
Successful businessman, willing to help out others,
but only those found worthy after close examination.

That would work, but aren't they a bit too cheerful ?

Dickens' heros are either too young or female, so that doesn't really work for Trump.

He isn't a lawyer, so they lawyer characters fit others far better and Dickens hated lawyers and all of the red tape of government bureaucracy. And he isn't a pauper nor a villain.

Also, dear old Charlie, as much as I love his works, was a damned bleeding heart LIBERAL, a lousy husband, a worse father, and a pretty rotten human being.

You’re pathetic and NOT as “clever” as you imagine yourself to be.

But Magwich is a criminal, was uneducated, and isn’t at all like Trump.

What are you mad about? We can't joke about Stallone on FR?

By the way, that is a picture of a real chimney sweep child, in case anyone is wondering.

He is to some degree. He was depicted as an uneducated buffoon, a criminal. However, one found in his inner soul the ability to care for those who needed help, and he attempted to offer help in the best way he could. He was very rough around the edges, but once past the surface there was something special inside which was unseen. Never been a Dickens fan for some reason. Only read the books when it was necessary and mandatory to do so. Nor was I a fan of many Dickens inspired movies other than A Christmas Carol which did manage to hold my interest. This is not to take away anything from the man himself. He just never was my cup of tea. To balance the scale it is confessed that Edgar Allen Poe was held in the same regard. It was noted on this thread in Dr. Sivana on post 25 what and why the answer. Frankly to compare TRUMP to any Dickens character is (IMHO) a silly waste of time. He seems to be more of a Sidney Sheldon or James Bond character than any Dickens dug up.

Sly? I thought that you meant that that picture was of Trump as a boy. Please forgive me for the mistake!

Of course we can joke about Stallone! :-)

And I know that that is a picture of a real chimney sweep's apprentice. Have you ever read THE WATER BABIES? I did when I was 8 and LOVED it; it's a fantasy about a little boy who was a chimney sweep's apprentice, just like the boy in the picture.

But Magwich only made lots of money to take care of Pip, make him a "gentleman, because Pip had been SO kind to him and he thought that his own child, Estrella, was dead. So it doesn't fit Trump at all.

Trump isn't even an Horatio Alger, because he came from an upper middle class family.

I'm quiet well read, but see Trump as a creature all his own. No fictional character comes to my mind, who could be his alter ego. Bits and pieces of him, perhaps, could be seen in some, but not the whole man.

Stallone is trying to sound cultured/"intellectual" but the analogy falls flat.

That's a reach, but I doubt that sly has ever heard, let alone read Martin Chuzzlewitt; but I have. :-)

Dickens LOVED that Americans loved his works and bought his books, but he looked down on them and didn't like them much.

Perhaps being the Pollyanna, that was the only similarity that could be found in any Dickens (which
was hardly remembered). There might be something solid and good if one were look past the surface.

Stallone has never been thought of as an intellect. But after so many blows to his head, that he even might make the attempt puts him in another league. He might be a very intelligent man I’ve no idea. But the characters he portrays have not been seen in that niche.

All that is certain at this time is:
Trump is my man
The man with the plan
And he plans great things for our America. WE NEED THAT!
and WE NEED TRUMP
Happy campaigning. Stay warm. Texas has another cold front coming through. No snow or ice, just cold
Night :0 (a yawn)

I really do NOT know what Sly is thinking. LOL

Yes, talked with the kiddo today and I know that it's cold in Texas today. Stay warm! :-)

Good night and pleasant dreams. Trump IS the right man for these times!
