Well, a blizzard watch IS something serious.

They don’t issue that for less than life threatening conditions any more.

All the hype aside, a blizzard is nothing to mess with.

If it indeed meets those criteria, it is something to get ready for.

What Defines a Blizzard?
http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/what-is-a-blizzard/5674708

“Officially, the National Weather Service defines a blizzard as a storm which contains large amounts of snow OR blowing snow, with winds in excess of 35 mph and visibilities of less than 1/4 mile for an extended period of time (at least 3 hours). When these conditions are expected, the National Weather Service will issue a “Blizzard Warning”. When these conditions are not expected to occur simultaneously, but one or two of these conditions are expected, a “Winter Storm Warning” or “Heavy Snow Warning” may be issued.”

And those weren’t the most recent major snowstorms. Remember the three snowmageddons of ‘09-’10?

So far predictions for DC are 20 to 24 inches. See link with precipitation maps. Snowmaggedon a few years ago, was a monster. A DC friend showed me one photo of almost 3 feet stacked on a patio table. That Valentines Day I helped my boyfriend dig 70 feet of 27” snow in front of his house in MD. He had broken his hip 6 weeks earlier. Many years ago I lived in downtown DC. A huge storm before 1968 with high winds left a drift in the street beside our apartment building. About 6 cars parked on either side of that street were completely invisible under the snow which lay flat from the building across the street to ours. Finally, a week later a garbage truck was able to bull its way through this drift.

On Monday the grocery stores were full of people buying for the storm. On Tuesday Home Depot was selling 40 lb. bags of Snow Melt. They had nothing lighter, and elderly people were needing help getting it into their carts. Hope they have help at home. I have warned my renters to have flashlights in case of power outage, and let me know if the power is out so I can drain the system if it is needed, or leave all faucets dripping. Good luck if you live in the east.

Winter ‘09-’10 was a record-breaker here in MD. 33” here within 24 hrs Feb 6. Never mind the big pre-Xmas snow and several other snows making it the biggest season ever.

And I have memories of other huge storms, but nothing I can even pinpoint like that winter.

The other I remember with no problem was ‘93-’94, but that was sheer cold and ice, not big snows.

I've been waiting all winter to finally post this, but here you go. The first official Bread and Milk Alert of the season.

Been doing it since the “Snowmaggedon” from a few years ago, which wasn’t as big as they hoped.

And that was AFTER the record-setting season of ‘09-’10, for which they missed the boat, I guess.

Well, that sucks. 27” of snow is a good bit of snow. We’ve had a quite open winter this year, not a lot of trouble at all.

The Weather Channel has been doing that for a few years now. A major reason why I quit watching them.

All of the added drama on TWC can be placed squarely at the feet of Jim Cantore, THE DRAMA QUEEN!!!

One winter weekend when there was 6 to 10 inches of snow falling, my son in Ranger ROTC asked Dad to drive him to the mountains for a 2 day and 1 night campout exercise for the squad. They dug a mildly down sloping trench, covered it with tarps and had a fire going at the bottom. They slept in a row head to toe, head to toe, about 8 or 10 of them. They put their boots in the foot of the sleeping bag so they wouldn’t have cold boots in the morning. In the middle of the night the guy ahead of my son rolled over and wack went the boots on his head. He finishes his 20th year in Special Forces this year. I guess that is what you call a hardhead. Here is a link for Images of major East Coast storms, mostly maps.

We’re supposed to take our troop snow cave camping in upstate NY in February. If we get enough snow, I’m building a trial cave in my backyard Saturday
