Insider leaks real reason for GOP kingpins' anti-Cruz venom
WND ^ | 1/23/16 | Greg Corombos

It's well known that many Republicans in Washington do not like Sen. Ted Cruz, but the full extent of that antipathy is coming to light this week as several current and former lawmakers say they prefer Donald Trump as the GOP nominee, although they have little regard for either man.

Some GOP consultants and strategists started the rumblings in recent days. Then Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad told Republicans in his state to oppose Cruz because of the senator's opposition to ethanol subsidies.

But the story broke wide open on Wednesday when former Senate Majority Leader and 1996 Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole said he would choose Trump over Cruz, going so far as to say a Cruz nomination would be "cataclysmic" for the Republican Party. Another former GOP Senate leader, Trent Lott, has said the same.

But Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, a Cruz supporter, is not swayed. While honoring Dole for his heroism in World War II, Gohmert told WND and Radio America many mainstream Republicans are worried about what a President Cruz would mean for them.

"You don't get any more establishment than Bob Dole and Trent Lott," Gohmert said. "So they're going to be an indication of where the establishment will go. They have more belief that Trump will make deals with them and that Ted Cruz will continue to stand on principle, as he has been."

-snip-

Gohmert believes the venom in the GOP is a result of Ted Cruz doing something most other politicians don't.

"If you're a person that's interested in lying or you're interested in twisting the truth or you're interested in breaking your promises that you made to get elected, then you're not going to care for Ted Cruz," Gohmert said.

Uh, this doesn’t make any sense. The NR could have posted 22 hate Cruz screeds to stop him.

But they didn’t and now the Cruz camp is trying to pretend what is and was, isn’t and wasn’t. LOL. nobodyn was buying it anyway, so this is not necessary.

Gohmert is an awful liar. He does better at the truth.

The rat will take out Cruz a lot more easily than Trump. I suspect reverse psychology going on here.

Agreed. The vast majority of the public has no idea who Ted Cruz is. If he is the nominee that will be the last you see or hear of him in the media. He will be completely sidelined and the Witch will be the only thing you see for months.

That’s about what I figured: Cruz is too principled for the establishment republicans.

They’re not worried about principles with Trump.

Yes, that is what they are trying to do, but nobody believes it.

Why should they? Trump has been pummeled ever since he entered the race by everyone and NO they have not accepted him.

They are hysterical. Much to my delight. *snicker*

What has Gohmert lied on? As far as we’ve ever seen he’s always stood for Consevatism on principle. As I recall he was one of the top around here of who peoplw were calling on for Speaker.

What conservative principles guided Cruz’s vote on the Corker Bill?

Or was he dealing with the GOPE that day?

Problem is that the Republican Establishment is in fact corrupt, venal, and engaged primarily in pursuit of self interest goals in maintaining its position in control over the levers of power.

Cruz is more likely to pursue an absolutist agenda similar to that pursued in the opposition direction by Barry--take no prisoners; scorched earth. Replace squishy quasi Republicans with office holders who will stand firmly on Constitutional and democratic principals.

On the other hand, Trump is not likely to be the pushover much of the establishment believes he is either. The McConnell who is committed to hanging on to his office whatever he has to do to accomplish that objective is likely to give more in a trade than an office holder who owes no one and is acting on principle.

So you take your choice. Maybe Trump's way is better. Maybe not. Maybe Cruz's way is not practical and cannot be done within the confines of four or eight years without taking steps even Senator Cruz would recognize as infringing on the constitutional rights and privileges of the citizens.

It is a close call--both men are committed to restoration of the American Republic. Neither one of them are in a position where they need to pursue personal enrichment at the expense of the public good.

I have no difficulty with Trump's prior history of policy directions inconsistent with his current stated objectives--he has been in a business dominated by establishment political interests and had done what he needed to do to adapt.

Neither do I have a problem with the fact that the establishment prostitutes don't like Cruz. I think the reason why is pretty clear.

Personally, I have no difficulty voting for either one of them. My current hope is that the current rock throwing does not lead to imbedded resistance to either one.

Bob and Trent Lott

Just two of MANY reasons many of us are fed up with the Grand Old Party.

Just look at the Ethanol issue in Iowa, and the writing is on the wall. Cruz said he'd end the subsidy, Trump said he'd continue that, the requirement, and the EPA to enforce it, and the establishment started the fawning over Trump and the full-court-press against Cruz.

That speaks volumes.

If you take Trump’s words as a candidate as him just being a negotiator staking out his starting positions, it’s a little easier to make sense of Trump. The problem is that no one knows how much he’ll give up to get what’s minimally acceptable to him or even what is minimally acceptable to him. I think even his morals will be negotiable. I hope his supporters understand that. If they do and support him with eyes wide open, then well, they’re just voting for who they want. And that’s how our system works.

Even with my own reservations about Trump, I think he will almost certainly be better than the Democrat alternative.

Cruz doesn't help himself by tweeting glaringly obvious lies like this:

"Adexposing how Trump has used eminent domain to bulldoze an elderly woman's home to create a limo parking lot" https://t.co/zK7wI1QQUC— Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) January 22, 2016
