Donald Trump just declared his intent to destroy American democracy
The Washington Post ^ | 2/26/2016 | Erik Wemple

Posted on 02/27/2016 1:57:52 PM PST by dschapin

In his remarks today at a rally in Fort Worth, Tex., Donald Trump knew he’d make news. “I’ve never said this before,” he declared.

We’ll await the word of the Washington Post Fact Checker on the integrity of the statement, but Trump did appear to be veering into a new talking point. A media-law talking point, that is:

One of the things I’m going to do, and this is going to make it tougher for me…but one of the things I’m going to do if I win…is I’m going to open up our libel laws so when they write purposely negative and horrible and false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money. We’re going to open up those libel laws. So that when the New York Times writes a hit piece, which is a total disgrace, or when the Washington Post, which is there for other reasons, writes a hit piece, we can sue them and win money instead of having no chance of winning because they’re totally protected.

An attack on media law is a logical extension of Trump’s rhetoric, not to mention a threat to American democracy. After all, he has displayed a highly undemocratic annoyance with the idea that the media is independent. For months he has been attempting to get the cameras at his rallies to properly pan around the thronged arenas, the better to capture his out-of-control popularity, even when the camera operators’ job is to stay on him. He has ridiculed reporter after reporter for reporting the facts of Trump’s march through the GOP primaries. Whenever he has been busted out by investigative journalism, he has attacked the institutions that have compiled it.

I disagree with Trump’s older statements.

When I look at his platform, I recognize it as Reagan’s.

You add in immigration on top of that, and it is very solid.

I’m not going to agree with anyone on everything.

I don’t agree with his comments on that issue he had with Scalia on affirmative action.

I disagree on other things over time. The problem for me, is how far down the list are those things.

They range in rank from 35-70 on my mental notes list.

His top objectives are my top objectives.

He is not Hitler.

He is not going to be Hitler.

Those that say he is have run out of rational things to say.

I should have given you more attention in my first post. I’m a bit cantankerous these days.

“Sullivan says...’except when the statement is made with actual malice...’”

Are malicious, obnoxious, left-leaning writers of newspaper articles exempt from being considered malicious, even though they are in fact malicious?

Are the concepts of libel negated because of the First Amendment?

Just asking.

IMHO

Current law already allows public figures to bring libel suits for willful, false, and malicious attacks. Trump wants to change existing law to make it easier for public figures to sue. That is very scary when you look at the sorts of things that Trump threatens to sue news organizations about.

Freedom of Speech is NOT a freedom to lie.

Going after the liars in our media has my support.

I don’t see protecting truth as a threat to liberty.

I see our communist propaganda liars in the media as a threat to our liberty.

I don’t know what you have read but I have heard him.

If, as you say, he wants the government to pay for everyone’s healthcare; what would the reason for allowing insurance companies to sell insurance across state lines?

Why would he also say he wants healthcare savings accounts?

And then answer why it would be necessary to have “serious tort reform” including loser pay?

What part of “private plans” would the government be paying for?

Your arguments, or those of whoever you read, make no sense.

I’m not an attorney, much less a Constitutional one, so I can’t answer that.

As a rational man (I don’t care what they say, LoL), it stands to reason you shouldn’t be able to publish/air/post false information about someone, particularly in a time when the public is trying to make up their mind if they are worthy of their vote or not.

This isn’t just a loss for the candidate, but a loss for those who might have supported him, and for the nation as a whole. So it is a big deal when the media lies.

I’ve seen things on Free Republic recently that I thought I would never see here. I’ve seen Trump supporters touting Trump as Napoleon. saying that losing Constituional rights is just the cost of having Trump, and that Trump opponents should be gassed. Nothing to indicate they were joking either.

The original family entity was named after the grandmom
And sons I think... Fred’s momS

When Donald got out of Wharton he joined the firm which mainly built middle income condos in the outer boroughs

Donald thru thick and thin eventually guided a business valued in 1973 at 50-70 million to what it is today

Rubio is just blowing it out his ass

A well worn exit

“Can’t we just Gas these National Review pukes.”

“In short, if we get Trump as president we will get a fixer and he will make America great again. But we may lose some Constitutional rights and will have to make sure Congress keeps him in check. “

All that is happening is Trump is hitting back for the hit pieces hitting him. This is merely tactical. Rather than respond individually to all the hits, which puts the focus on the charges, he is calling The Times and Post liars and threatening to prove it in court. He doesn’t have to actually change any libel laws - he merely has to imply that if the bar were lower he would clean up in any lawsuit against them. This puts them on the defensive and makes them the issue.
