Why Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz's Tax Plans Generate More Growth than Donald Trump's
Tax Foundation ^ | 2/26/2016 | Alan Cole

Posted on 03/04/2016 11:42:01 PM PST by JediJones

...our model shows more growth from the Rubio and Cruz plans than the Trump plan, even though Trump proposed a larger cut:

While Donald Trump largely opted for big rate reductions across the board, Rubio and Cruz made improvements to the structure of taxes, while cutting taxes by less overall.

Senators Rubio and Cruz both put thought into the nature of the taxes that businesses pay. They noticed that the current way businesses are asked to calculate taxes creates a bias in the code. When a business builds something new, like, say, a new industrial lathe, that decision actually has a higher tax burden, on net, than simply disbursing the money to shareholders. That’s bad news for machinists, who would much rather that they had new and better tools with which to do their jobs.

Rubio (through modifications of the corporate income tax) and Cruz (through the total conversion of corporate income taxes to his business flat tax) both fix this problem by making the full amount of money spent on the lathe deductible from taxable income.

In contrast, Trump did little to change the domestic corporate tax system, and merely lowered its rate. This policy has its benefits, including the benefit of growth, but it substantially reduces revenue.

...the senators pay attention to the details of the tax base, and try to fix incentive problems that the tax base creates. Mr. Trump mostly lowered rates.

America under the Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz tax plan would simply have more lathes and buildings and trucks, and people would be more productive and have higher incomes because of it.

It sure looks like Cruz’s tax plan has a VAT in it. Its business flat tax is a variation of it. But to take his whole plan and label it by the simple term VAT seems unfair.

The USA is broke but I haven’t done my homework on the different tax plans proposed. What I have seen is all plans add to the debt.

When the man running I trust the most says, “My number one priority in the Senate since day one has been economic growth, and the reason is simple. Economic growth is foundational to every other challenge we have.” I trust him.The man is smart.

Good point, is it any better when you allow illegals back in after they leave as Trump is proposing, with his touch and go amnesty. Cruz OTOH is proposing legal immigrations levels tied to the number of unemployed Americans.

For the sake of argument, we'll assume that neither Cruz nor Trump will deport anywhere near close to the 11 million illegals and only the violent ones. Beyond that, Cruz will do nothing to curb further illegal immigration via a wall and Cruz is much more likely pass amnesty.

When Obama proposed a VAT, conservatives protested, and the idea was scotched.

When Cruz or Paul proposes it, conservatives defend it.

This is one of the things I hate most about this stinking election cycle.

How about we return to the plumb line of principle and make the politicians conform to it, instead of the other way around?

We’re never going to save this free republic if we don’t do this. No way. No how.

I’ll accept your apology for what you called me at any time.

Still open for debate is whether Cruz's Simple Tax Plan can be called a VAT. There is much more to it than that.

I apologize to you for my post, "spreading lies"

I'm so up in arms to what has happened here at FR. Most Trumpsters here are mean, ugly and spread false stories making it hard to stand behind that kind of group.

Apology accepted.

But it’s still a VAT.

What we really need to do is junk the whole income tax system, and stop taxing businesses and our productive power. In other words, we need to stop being stupid.

Cruz’s plan goes in the exact opposite direction we must go to restore the economic prosperity of the country.

I will admit that if Trump does not include spending cuts then his plan is not that good.

Where is Trump going to come up with a trillion dollars in cuts each year?

And by the way, I am in NO WAY a Trump supporter.

His tax plans suck too.

Here at Free Republic one use to be able to come here and get straight up, factual news. Posts with links to falsehoods where deleted unless clearly posted with sarcasm mark.

I hope FR can recover to the good old days after this election but this whole country is on its last string.

There’s no doubt that it’s worse than it’s ever been.

Where it will all lead, as far as this particular forum, I do not know.

I hate the establishmant. Cruz has been fighting them since elected. That is where I stand.

Is he perfect no, but he is the best one standing.

Well, when it comes time for Cruz to play judas goat for Donald Trump and lead his supporters on into the slaughter pens, come talk to me then about the alternative.

Thanks for the respectful conversation.

I don’t agree. I think Trump is a reprobate who will say anything to profit himself.

If he’s elected, he will be surrounded by all of the same people who got us in this mess in the first place.

I wish Cruz would go talk with Trump.

Cruz is not going to win this nomination, Trump is BUT Trump needs Cruz’s help in policies, laws, regulations, etc, etc...

I wish Cruz would tell Trump he wouldn’t steal the limelight. Cruz would work in the background, helping Trump stay true.

Trump/Cruz 2016 is our only hope.
