CBS poll: Plurality of Americans now disapprove of decision to use the atomic bomb on Japan

An addendum to Larry’s item this morning, which correctly diagnosed Obama’s appearance in Hiroshima as a bit more apologetic than the White House wants observers to believe. If you come to the site of an act that ended four years of horrendous war and insist that a “moral revolution” is needed to ensure that such acts aren’t repeated, you’re obviously making a statement about the morality of that original act. If you want to protest guns, you don’t do it at a place where someone once used one to defend himself successfully from a threat. You do it at a site where one was used without justification, to murder.

But I digress. After decades of Americans defending Truman’s decision to drop the bomb, we’ve now had enough population churn to finally move the numbers. People who lived through the meat grinder of World War II are dying off, replaced by people who’ve never lived in a country that has a military draft, let alone one that might have placed them in the middle of a maelstrom like X-Day. Go figure that when Gallup polled the public in August 1945 on whether they approved of the development of the atomic bomb, fully 69 percent said yes. Fast-forward 71 years and here we are.

"CBS poll: Plurality of Americans now disapprove of decision to use the atomic bomb on Japan"

Are these the same Americans that twice elected a president that encourages nuclear proliferation?

Ironically, today in Russia, they celebrate V-E Day with what’s called “The Immortal Regiment”. The relatives of those who served during WWII march, carrying pictures of those who fought during the war. It’s actually a very moving thing to watch.

Russians never apologize for winning.

And this is why you have an idiotic community organizer elected twice....my father was also awaiting to be shipped to the pacific after 4 years in Europe. This action by Truman likely saved his life.

Yet, if North Korea or Iran are able to perfect the technology given them by Bill Clinton and Obama and make a nuclear warhead that they use on us, those nimwits claiming that we were wrong to nuke Japan will be very happy that we can hit back, very hard.

The problem with leftist ideology is that it is capable of only looking at one side, no matter how complex the problem. I think that adding a third digit to one’s IQ enables people to actually look at more than one facet of a issue.

I wonder how many Americans would be opposed to a random fictitious man-on-the-street question: “Do you think America was right or wrong for dropping the bomb on Djibouti in 1952?” Many would say “Yes, America was wrong!” No facts needed.

CBS poll: Plurality of Americans now disapprove of decision to use the atomic bomb on Japan

That's because American schools no longer teach American history. Kids today don't know about Pearl Harbor, the Batan Death March, the invasion of Manchuria in 1937, or any of the other horrible crimes against humanity that were perpetrated by the Japanese before and during WWII. The best estimate is that between 3 and 10 million people perished because of Japan during WWII. I honestly believe Truman's decision to drop Fat Boy on Japan ended up saving thousands of American lives and, perhaps, even Japanese lives. I also believe the apology by Obozo is without merit and does this Republic immeasurable harm.

A plurality of Americans were not in Higgins boats waiting to go ashore.

It was the right kove andmit saved more lives,on both sides than it killed.

Besides all,who say japan was ready to surrender, they were not going to surrender unconditionally. This made them surrender unconditionally.

We didnt let the germans surrender conditionally either.

My friend’s father, a Marine who survived Iwo Jima, died several weeks ago, so I guess that makes the point about the people who went through the hell of WWII and fighting the Japanese now being replaced by ignorant idiots.

More than twice the number of Japanese civilians had already been killed by fire bombing then what the 2 H bombs did combined.

For the next 1000 years, Truman will be second guessed on his decision to use nuclear bombs on Japan, and in all likelihood, over that time his decision will become less favorable.

But as for the historical reality, a land invasion of Japan would have been as or more destructive to that country. And had, Truman elected to go with an invasion of Japan, there is a good chance I would have never been born.

In the end, the US and Japan are strong allies and Japan quickly adapted to become essentially a western democracy.

Thus, the question is not whether we apologize if not, the reality is that Japan is an American partner and no longer has expansionist desires.

Had Japan not become a liberal democratic state, the Asian Pacific region, with Japan, Korea, N Korea and China would make the Middle East look like Luxembourg.
