The Iranians are harassing the USN in the Persian Gulf. China is threatening every single country plus the US in the western Pacific. North Korea is developing a submarine launch system. Russia is destabilizing the Ukraine, if it is possible to make that regime even more unstable. Syria and Iraq are ablaze.

Obama's foreign policy is working everywhere.

Now, I am not in the Navy, nor was I ever, nor do I play a Naval Officer on TV. However, the thing with big guns (and the 5’54” guns are big) is that they have a relatively low rate of fire. IOW, perhaps they wouldn’t be such a big deterrent. If’n I were the captain of that destroyer, I’d have been far more tempted to use the Phalanx CIWS for my warning shots - because that system is FAR more able to take out 4 fast boats quickly. That’s the system that you’d most likely use to actually defend the ship with, so why not use it for warning shots?

During the Cuban missile crisis, a Soviet freighter was rapidly approaching the ‘picket line’ around Cuba. The picket commander asked the Joint Chiefs what he was supposed to do if the freighter didn’t stop. The flash message back from JCS to the picket commander was, “If he doesn’t stop, sink him.”

The response today would be more like, “Draw a red line in the water and tell him not to cross it. If he crosses, we’ll”... (signal lost).
