Top 5 Biggest Road Construction Projects In DFW

NORTH TEXAS (CBS11) – It is nearly impossible these days in North Texas to avoid road construction projects. While billions of dollars are being pumped into the roadway system, TxDOT said it still can’t keep up with the growth.

“There are a thousand people moving a day to Texas and we’ve (North Texas) got most of them,” said TxDOT Dallas spokesperson Donna Huerta. “We can’t keep up with that kind of demand, but what we can do is take what we have and make it better.”

With a new approach allowing contractors to design and build a project simultaneously, TxDOT said roads are being built twice as fast as they were just decade ago.

“We are just trying to be more efficient, quicker, and then get out of the way,” Huerta said.

Here are the top five road construction projects currently underway in DFW.

California is gridlocked too many places.

Texas is smart.

Texas needs a liberal ban to make sure it stays Texas.

Have you ever wondered why SH 360 doesn’t directly connect with I-30?

Because I-30 used to be a tollroad and the only way to go from Dallas to Ft Worth. There were NO exits off it back in the 60's and 70's. But it was the only way to get to the Stockyards in the day.

Like N Texas, us Rust-Belt refugees are also immigrating to the Atlanta area. Atlanta area traffic is rated worse than N Texas. We are going to spend billions creating more sphaghetti junctions.

Government traffic gurus are clueless to why Atlanta traffic is so bad.

Signage. Two signs on the expressway side by side. People assume the sign on the left would be for the left fork of the Y; and the sign on the right for the right fork of the Y.

But no. The placement of signs is just opposite of what drivers normally think. So drivers change lanes to get in the wrong lane and then, at the last minute realize they are in the wrong lane and again change lanes to get the the correct lane. Or worse yet, they come to a complete stop in the middle of the expressway bewildered as to which way to go.

Then there are the signs off the expressway. The main street near my house changes names 5 times in 6 blocks. The GPS can’t keep up with all the name changes and constantly contradicts what the street sign says.

We lived in the DC area for a few years and our daughter went to Pensacola (PCC). We would drive by Atlanta in the dead of night so that I would not have to deal with the traffic. Always bothered me.

There was an exit at 360. But, it was a long and winding ramp to get to the toll booth, so that the line of people waiting to pay the toll didn't back up onto the highway.

Dude, I can’t remember back that far. I used to drive my motorcycle from Mesquite to my job as a security guard at NAS Dallas and do not remember the exits anymore.

A waste is a terrible thing to mind!

Dude, I can’t remember back that far.

It was a long time ago. But, even after they removed the toll booths, those ramps remained.

You can still see them on google maps:

Look for the loops under the label for the Crowne Plaza Suites.

The toll booth used to be on the access road southeast of where the highways intersect.

What I’d like to know is, Who is the moron who thought it would be an excellent idea to have major construction projects on both I-35E and I-35W at the same time?

Where do you go to find that special degree of stupidity?

LOL, I've been asking that very same question!

Several of the projects are to fix old, poor designs (for example, the Horseshoe).

On the other hand, they are having to re-do the new, poor design of the US-75 - George Bush interchange.

And at some point, they’ll need to re-do the fairly new entrances and exits on 75 between Northwest Highway and Woodall Rogers. A complete lack of common sense was the TxDOT’s contribution to that design.

Texas would be well served if they shut down every college program on traffic engineering, fired everyone at TxDOT with a college degree, and hired a whole new engineering staff from out of state. There might be a few competent folks at TxDOT engineering, but it isn’t worth any more effort to find them than it would to put on a successful unicorn hunt.
