Millennials are killing the dinner date
nypost ^

Posted on 12/29/2016 11:31:21 AM PST by ChicagoConservative27

In recent years, somewhere between endless Tinder swipes and countless OkCupid matches, the dinner date has fallen by the wayside.

As online dating surges in popularity, few millennials have the time, money, or desire to sit with a stranger over a long meal. Only 7 in 10,000 messages in a recent OkCupid IAC survey suggested “grabbing some dinner” and a somewhat less scientific survey this reporter conducted of several dozen actively dating 20-somethings found that dinner has become a highly taboo first date. Last month, Moody’s Investors Service slashed its operating-profit growth forecast for the restaurant sector. (This appears to complement another trend noted by market researcher NPD Group that suggests 57 percent of meals in the US are eaten alone.)

There’s good reason why people don’t want to sit through a meal with a stranger for an hour, or often longer. One singleton this reporter spoke to called it her “worst nightmare,” and another said the idea of sitting through an unspecified number of hours of food, drinks or dessert makes her anxious. A recent article in Cosmopolitan detailed “Why First-Date Dinners Suck,” listing similar reasons: The date category is antiquated, the time frame of the event is too long if there is no chemistry, and eating is too “intimate.”

“Given the likelihood an individual online date will not lead to a long-term relationship, .. .”

My son signed up on one of those dating sites, first time he did that. Met someone the first two weeks, dated for a year and now they are getting married in a few months. She is beautiful, genuine, smart. . .heck, we’ve told our son if they break up we are dropping him and keeping her. Hah.

I have not tracked the stats regarding long term relationships resulting from on-line dating websites, so his experience may be unquie.

Oh my God..... I see what you did there.

Well, I can only say, I’ve always been pleased with what I have found.........................The alternative to me is too painful to contemplate................

And besides: Aren't business meals generally restricted to business relationships that are already relatively "developed," i.e., have advanced beyond the "first meeting" stage?

Not when your out selling. Both that endeavor and dating involve cultivating a relationship (though the dating one is more intimate certainly). You need a certain amount of social grace to get through either.

I had one candidate who I'd made up my mind to hire. Sharp kid. Right out of college. Bright, personable, fit in well with the guys. Lunch was going to be a formality...... until he drained three beers (in an hour), made a pass at the waitress, and was a general boor.

1. I would respect his ability to hold his liquor (presupposing, of course, that he indeed held it).

2. Well, at least he didn't make a pass at the waiter.

3. Boorishness is unpardonable, though.

4. So, whom did you finally hire to be the deacon of your parish?

Regards,

Oh, NO ONE ELSE before millennials ever cared about getting laid, right? I think it was almost worse before. Pedophilia wasn’t a thing to worry about (meaning it happened but no one seemed to care), nor was AIDS.

Today, millennials seem to meet in one of two ways. They have a core group of friends of both genders who “hang out.” Often the deepest core of this group doesn’t interdate. But the new friends of friends who join can become couples.

Or they meet online playing games in groups, and start chatting.

They have very little money, they are students or working low income jobs, so they tend to get ethnic or fast foods. But they also like to do fun things. They will still take the date to concerts (and even pay for the one who can’t afford it, boy or girl) and amusement parks etc. They can get more food that way and spend elsewhere the $100 a good restaurant will cost them.

People tend to paint with broad brushes, and your comments fit that mode. I have 3 millennial daughters, and know several of their friends. They are nothing like you describe "millennials", and have some very good, deep relationships.

However, formal dating is mostly a thing of the past, though, as they tend to date in packs. The Brits were doing this when I was an exchange student in the mid 80's, and I envied it then!

I commend you for having standards on who you would consider for further relationship development. As for these hapless millenials, either some womb alarm clocks start clanging loudly or the future of their DNA line is in danger. If this approach had been the order of the day in the mid-70s, I can think of a couple of Gen Xers who would not be here today.

Most of the young people I know are making what I did at their age, 30+ years ago. And the price of everything has done what since then? It's quadrupled or more.

So it's not difficult or complex to understand, for the bigger ticket items like homes, raising families, having babies and all those accompanying expenses such as food, healthcare, insurance and on and on it's not happening for the young folks.

So for the most young folk, intimate dinners at nice restaurants will be the realm of seniors for a long time to come.

One singleton this reporter spoke to called it her “worst nightmare,” [...]

What an odd use of that word; I thought that a singleton was a child who is not the product of a multiple birth (twins, triplets, etc.).

My Millenial daughters are not part of the hookup culture.
One is married, and the other will be next year.

Just about all of their friends though do engage in that.

Does he not realize the lunch itself is part of the interview process...

Well, that was roughly what I thought. If he hadn't figured that out yet, I didn't need him to on my company's nickel. Talk about an HR bomb waiting for a place to go off....

Cow's name was a bit of an exaggeration. :-) Sandwich agonizing and waiter quizzing ("I'm a vegetarian though I do eat some kinds of animal products. What kind of stock is used in the soup?? Is this organic? Etc?") were absolutely true, though.

If you do go on a date to a dinner and movie, go to the movie first. Then you have something to talk about at dinner.
Or just watch each other chew.

If I date again I agree. The coffee date would be the least investment for both, and still enough time to get to know some basics about the person.

I’ve seen old Ben’s “older woman” philosophy summarized as -

They don’t swell
They don’t tell
And they’re grateful as hell.

Millenials don’t much like just talking, desire to be on their smartphone instead.
Fast-paced ADHD video age makes talk...boring.
Male/female social positions are totally screwed up and they are confused and apprehensive.
Porn poisons many young men.
Arrogance poisons many young women.
Easy sex poisons young relationships.
Marriage is now a high financial risk for men.
IMHO

Being born without a sugar Daddy in America now-a-days is blessing and a curse. The globalists ruined everything. There is no cushion anymore. You have to do everything right. The right school, the right career, meet the right person at just the exact right time. If you make one mistake you are doomed. And a recession can come along and wipe you out even if yo do everything right in the correct order. Take marriage, one divorce you are screwed forever.

TGIF ChiliRuby's Applebee.

I refer to these establishments collectively as "O'Chilibee's Roadhouse." They all have the same food from Sysco Food Services and the menus are printed by the same company too.
