If Congress Is Serious About Getting Rid Of IRS, It Must Pass Big-Bang Tax Reform

Many of the ideas that emerge from Washington are stale, unimaginative and unworkable. Not so the latest pitch from a group of conservative congressional Republicans: Eliminate the IRS.

This goes beyond some kind of political revenge fantasy. It's time to consider the damage that the IRS does both to Americans' freedoms as individuals and to the costs it imposes on the economy as a whole, argue the 151 members of the Republican Study Group, an in-house conservative think tank, in their newest budget proposal.

The proposal, an alternative to the House Budget Committee's official 2018 budget, comes as part of a much broader tax reform plan that would leave taxes flatter and fairer for both corporations and individuals than is currently the case.

"At its worst, the IRS has shown a capacity for outright corruption and political targeting," the group's budget, released late last week, argued. "Under the Obama administration, the IRS illegally targeted conservatives. It has channeled millions of taxpayer dollars away from taxpayer assistance for employee bonuses. It has allowed taxpayer information to be compromised in a data breach. The IRS has even intentionally leaked confidential taxpayer information. This is a blatant breach of trust. The American taxpayer deserves better."

Indeed. But even many conservatives concede that getting rid of the IRS would be difficult, if not impossible. So how would the RSG accomplish its goal?

It would move tax collection duties to "new, smaller and more accountable departments" within the Treasury Department. There would be a tax unit for businesses, one for individuals and families, and another for dispute resolution.

Again, this is not just about "going after the IRS." But when the nonpartisan Tax Foundation estimates that, in 2016 alone, total U.S. tax compliance costs were nearly $409 billion,

Congress is as serious about eliminating the IRS about as much as they’re serious about eliminating Obamacare.

There will always be a need for the tax collector. The question has to do with how many. A flat tax will do it. Fair Tax just might really do it.

it will never happen - get rid of the IRS, and there will just be another agency with a different same, doing the same thing and being used in the same way

You need to get rid of the 16th Amendment.

25% across the board tax cut, fair to the prince and fair to the pauper:

Each American taxpayer gets to work tax free once every 4 yrs.

Simple, yet effective.

FAIR TAX -

No more control by gov’t - they wouldn’t even know how much you earned or where from -where you work, etc///

100%of our paycheck - IN YOUR POCKET.

THIS is freedom like our country in the beginning - yet, more money goes to DC - the drug cartels and other under the table money will be paying.

ANYTHING that leaves the gov’t in control - will mean the gov’t WILL control.they use it like the KGB. You really think that the percentages quoted for Flat TAx would stay the same? Income tax started out at 1%

Congress critters are not serious about anything except lining their own pockets, getting reelected, and keeping the gravy train rolling. Who are they kidding? They will never get rid of the IRS.

This Republican congress is a laughing stock. They are quickly sealing their fates and the countries in 2018. They will lose a lot of seats in that election because right now other than Gorsuch I have no reason to vote for these cowards. Yeah, yeah I know speaker Pelosi... Has not Ryan been just as bad? What have we got from the GOP House and Senate other than Gorsuch? NOTHING.

Trump will club the congress, Republican and Democrat over the head like baby seals in 2020 and win re-election and in the next 7 yrs. the statist, establishment will fight a holding action to maintain the status quo of screw the American people and obey your master at the Chamber of Crony Commerce. I think the CCC traitors need to be tared and feathered to get their attention at some point, bunch of America hating scumbags.

Representative apportionment of taxes:

Divide last years spending down to a per senator and per representative basis. Send the tax bill to each state. Require the state to pay it’s federal tax bill to the US Treasury before it pays for any state spending. Allow the states to collect taxes from their citizens as they see fit. Do not allow states to tax citizens of other states.

The IRS shrinks to a small office in the Dept of Treasury.

Why would Congress get rid of the top selling item on their menu of favors? Toss in a million bucks of campaign contributions and you can get a personal loophole for yourself or a punishing tax rule for your competitors.

No one understands the tax laws so unless you have the simplest 1040EZ return, you have likely made a mistake that can be bumped up to an audit or criminal prosecution if you become inconvenient to the Washington elite.

The state sales tax people could assist administering a flat tax saving money.

I like a flat tax because it is a levy on one’s ability to spend. Everyone contributes something.

” ... 1/2 the country pays nothing in income taxes!”

The same half that gets “tax credits” and “free” health care.

I hear that more states are considering getting rid of their income taxes. Texas, South Dakota and Washington have done fine w/o it for years. If enough states can survive with no income tax, the federal government should be able to also.
