Sorry about the continued lousy response time, but FR is still under a DOS attack

There are also posters (Boomer again among others) claiming they could do this on cloud for just a few hundred per year. Well, maybe so. I wish them luck.

Nope, you must be thinking of someone else, because I have no idea what it cost to host a domain like this. I've been asking for months about how much it cost due to the "millions" you've collected over the last 20 plus years which is your right in a free and open market system. I congratulate you for being so smart all those years ago.

I have no idea how much goes into your pocket other than it cost something like $2500 a month for bandwidth as you have listed although anyone can do the math. You apparently are no good at taking a compliment because you singled me out even though I have been very polite and congratulatory toward your business of owning this forum. I wonder why that is.

Constructive criticism is meant to help not insult but you have chosen to take it as an insult. Why is that? I'm just a little guy in the big cog who makes pennies to your dollars but I do have a little bit of education in computer science. Not enough, if I even wanted to, to start another conservative site although I suspect there are conversations about that I'm not privy to. I'm an avid reader who spends some time on other forums for very different (non political) hobbies so I know what's what when it comes to being the end user on those forums.

You can continue to single me out if you like but I have done nothing wrong and have only supported what you do here. If your ego can't handle a little constructive criticism meant to help; I'm truly sorry for that. You still need to upgrade the software to something closer to the year 2017 and not 1998. As I have said many times; the software is available to both upgrade to a more user friendly format but also keep it exactly like it is for those who don't like change. There will always be those who don't like change so why try to change them? You have the wealth of information from those who work in the IT field who have offered to donate their time to help you get all the problems straightened out that other businesses would die for. Again; you are very lucky. I just hope you realize that.

I have no doubt. FR & JR have been a a spear in the side of the Deep State, the Uniparty and the New World Order from the get go.

Thanks for the post/explanation. We are all grateful for the service John and you have been providing to our Country and Freeperland these many years (I'm on year 20 now, 19 years as el Cid).
Prayers for you in catching and smiting the varmint.

I understand your thinking and it’s a brilliant idea but it would not thwart a smart enemy.

One horrific way to do DDOS is to take over the huge number of internet-of-things. They are woefully unprotected, laughably insecure.

FR could use a distributed P2P backup system to fall back on when the going gets rough.... there are many freepers who would be willing to run servers to distribute ip addresses to keep it up....it could be run on a few hundred old smart phones and be accessed using a browser plugin. It would be very hard to attack such a system as you would basically have to attack every single freepers ip with DOS.

I’ll be here until the whole world is knocked out by a massive EMP burst.
Then I will be signaling by smoke signal.

I tried to post a news article from Fox but it just would not load. I waited for several minutes to no avail

Azure? Is that microsoft, ie, Bill Gates? Sorry, I just don’t feel comfortable putting the on/off switch to this pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-constitution, pro-America conservative site in microsoft’s hands. Nor google’s, nor Amazon’s, etc. How long would it be until they demand we start pulling our Judeo-Christian posts because they are offensive to queers, dykes, trannies, abortionists, jihadists, etc?

And why? Because we’ve had a little downtime recently? All hardware/software systems are gonna have some downtime once in awhile. Been in the business for 45 years. It happens. It’s not like we’re a major financial institution or an airline or something that is mission critical. We’re a mom and pop conservative discussion site and we treasure our freedom to speak freely and our independence from big brother and big corporate snooping eyes.

I’d rather stay independent for as long as we possibly can. It’s one of the reasons we don’t sell advertising and don’t register as a 501c non-profit. We don’t want anyone telling us what we can or cannot say or do.

Thanks.

I had the same thoughts.

I really don’t want something like Amazon or MS to have the power to shut down FR at some future critical time :-/

"Maybe you should contact the FBI"

The police would need to take the server for a "while" in order to copy ALL the files. At least that is how they deal with personal computer issue.

It’d be a real shame if this attacker’s name and address should get released to the public. Some poor individual driven mad by this DOS attack might just track him down and cut off all his protruding parts. Yep, be a real shame if something like that were to happen...

You know you're over the target when you're "Catching FLACK".
Free Republic is a real threat to the Left and to the "Establishment Republicans".

My suggestion is to convert to a "MAC Operating System".
Then the DOS attacks will not work.

Thanks for the information.

I have found that going back one step and trying to load the page again works better than sitting around waiting, for what that’s worth.

Love this site and hope you solve it soon.

That is interesting. Would like to split this fork by suggesting that instead of FB *shudder* as back-up, we go to an FR Discord server as a backup when FR is down. Lot of tools, a mobile app, we can't be individually ddos'd (they use Cloudflare CDN) and Discord apparently hosts quite a few red-pilled forums already...the kids showed me how it works, it's more of a gamer site but you can thread by topic as with an FB post.

Also worth noting from the link provided this excerpt about Discord's struggle with DDOS:

"Performance wise, Discord would need to transition from serving their content from a single homed server to a high performing CDN (Content Delivery Network) partner that could serve their static assets from all around the globe. Security wise, Discord needed to protect their websockets-based traffic from the rampant DDoS attacks that they were experiencing. As CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy explained, "Since we are a gamer focused product we attract a lot of users who love to DDoS each other during game matches. As we grew more popular the intensity and occurrences of these DDoS attacks increased to the point where our engineers were constantly dealing with them. Before Cloudflare, we were using a large number of HAProxy boxes with DNS load balancing to be able to failover during DDoS attacks on our real-time gateways." However, their initial hardware solution could cost Discord up to six figures annually at scale and would still require work from Discord's engineers. Discord thus needed an affordable, easily scalable solution to stop these attacks or, according to Vishnevskiy, Discord's customer experience and retention would significantly drop."

In August 2015, Discord came to Cloudflare just as they hit 25,000 concurrent users...Discord easily scaled the business ...by leveraging Cloudflare's Content Distribution Network (CDN). Cloudflare's CDN works by caching content to over 115 global Points of Presence (PoP's), and then serving it directly to users from the nearest PoP..."We have Cloudflare sit in front of our websockets servers to absorb Layer 7 attacks and various layer 3 & 4 reflection attacks...Cloudflare quickly and securely serves our traffic even with spikes of websocket events up to 2 million/second."
