Republicans approval of Congress is at an all-time low for the year. It turns out skipping town after failing to follow through on a 7-year-old health care promise is not popular with voters.
The climate makes Col. Allen Wests column today especially effective. Whos in charge? he wondered, voicing the frustrations of so many Americans.
There is no justification for being on recess right now, he said in a conversation with Townhall Wednesday. "At least thats not how it works in the military."
When I think about how I was brought up in the military you dont just pack up and go home until the mission is done and youve exceeded the standard, he explained.
The House went home as well, despite not offering any tax reform plan, he noted. The American people can only shake their heads.
The last few sentences of Wests column were especially intriguing he seemed to hint he is considering another run for Congress.
"I freely admit, if I were still in Congress I would be embarrassed," he wrote. "I also admit that what I am witnessing inspires me to consider a return, the American people deserve better."
I asked him to elaborate.
There have been some people here in Texas that have asked me to consider it and so my wife and I are praying about it, West said. Well make the decision at the right time.
Theres a 75 percent chance right now that I will be willing to do that, he added, understanding how vicious and ugly campaigns can be.
He at least knew he is not jumping in the ring for the 2018 cycle.
At a Young Americas Foundation conference I attended a few years ago at which West was speaking, I asked him if he would consider running for president. The question was met with generous applause from the young audience, who clearly saw leadership qualities in the speaker.
West simply responded, If the Lord calls me to serve.
I asked him if that answer still rings true today.
I will always seek to serve God and country, he said. If that is an opportunity that would arise, it would be an incredible honor.
I second that motion. He'd certainly get my vote.
Yep. He’s a Texan now.
Yes, he did. Some years back, as I recall.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t he against Trump early on? Is he still a never Trumper? If so, he’ll be just another RINO. I hope I’m wrong, because I liked him when he was a Rep.
He came out in support of Trump way before the election.
He is in Florida, right? Bill Nelson is up, I think.
Nope. Like it says in article, West lives in TX, now.
If that’s who you’re talking about ;-)
I’d love to see this! He says he wouldn’t run in 2018...so maybe 2020. He lives in Texas now.
Just because someone doesn't write an op-ed about President Trump or doesn't mention him, that person has to be a never Trumper.
I'm getting tired of that nonesense
Good.
We need him. Sewer needs to be drained, and he’s a no-bullshit man.
Was you one of those too that set the 2008 and 2012 general election out, or voted for some 3rd party member because you didn't like the nominee. If so than you are to blame along with those who sat the elections out or voted for someone that had no chance.
I didn’t say a damn thing about anyone writing op-eds. I vaguely remember listening to some interviews where he stated he wasn’t for Trump. I simply asked a question as to whether my recollections were true. Was he still against Trump? Maybe you need to reread what I wrote and tamp down your nonsense.
I thought he ran from Florida last time.
If he decides to make a go he had better get some people who know how to win campaigns not just rhetoricians. He could use some Trump magic.
He did, but moved to Texas after he lost.
Senators who are actually less than reliable don’t make your list, while some of the most reliable, very conservative Senators you say are “Democrats in R Jerseys.” You even have Ben Sasse on there with 94% liberty rating from Conservative Review - even getting 60% on that list is no easy accomplishment, let alone 94%, yet you declare he’s closer to being a Democrat than Republican. https://www.conservativereview.com/scorecard?chamber=senate&state=&party=R
The first two are winnable; Al Green could probably be provoked into doing something stupid enough to lose; the last two would be Texas tuff. SJ has too much well-placed griftin' built up, and Gene is too clean.
OTOH, West fits 33rd like a glove in the way Bobo voters in MI and WI flipped for Trump ie they are open to prosperity gospel; and the 30th is just sexist/dumb/disconnected enough to vote for a successful black man over an ageing ratchet regardless of party.
We know you read this website Congressman ... so if you want to run, let us know ... a blue district Texas flip in 2020 might be very much needed ...
Oh hell yes! Cornyn is part of the problem. Colonel West said he would walk through hell with cans of gasoline to support the troops under his command. That is good enough for me. His actions in Iraq cost him his career in the Army. His actions saved lives of his men. He is a patriot!
His actions after leaving The Army have been 100% conservative and constitutional beliefs. We do not need one Colonel West, we need an army of people like Colonel West.
Go for it Colonel West be it Senator or representative. We have your back as you had the backs of our troops. There is a place for you here in Texas Colonel West.
After he left the Army he was a representative in Florida. He was Rino-ed out by the Republican Elite. The Republican Elite "can't handle the truth".
