How bad has gun violence gotten in Sacramento, Calif.? City leaders now plan to pay gang members $1.5 million for a cease-fire. Following a fatal shooting last weekend in a city park, the Sacramento city council unanimously approved a controversial program called Advance Peace in an effort to address a recent spike in violence. The program offers gang members cash stipends for graduating from school and generally staying out of trouble.

From your link:

He also added that in the 6 1/2 years since the O.N.S. Fellowship was launched, 72 percent of the Fellows have not been suspected for new gun crimes since becoming a Fellow.

So 28% of them HAVE been "suspected for new gun crimes," and an unknown percentage above that have avoided being caught or exposed.

FR isn’t close to what it once was, but posts like this are still around from time to time, and the main reason I still linger here.

If I correctly recall, the unanimously approved plan will rely on convicted felons as mentors (not making this up) and will offer gang-bangers a stipend of $1,000 per month to not kill people

Oh my this plan sounds better all the time. I guess we should have waited for all the details before deciding it was a terrible plan.

I think we must have missed the point of the intended outcome. This sounds more like a vocational program for criminals...to make them better criminals. It will likely be very successful at that!

The star ‘fellow’ was indicted in May for two murders- which happened while he was collecting $1300 a month from the program.

Well it is obvious the problem is they are not paying enough. Time for the taxpayers to ante up more money.

the thing is, SacTown knows who the gangbangers are - enough to be able to cut them all a check. So, round them up, and put them to work rebuilding Alcatraz and tripling its size. Most are from the bay area, anyway.

or, we need an Australia to ship these clowns off to with a pocket knife and a box lunch.

I would not recommend an actual graduation ceremony for this particular group...but what do I know?

Sometimes the stupidity absolutely amazes me. The cliché “what could possibly go wrong” immediately comes to mind.

Exactly what I thought when I read it, I decided that would be too obvious for post #1 though. LOL

I think you are right. The same thing happens with those huge advances from publishers to people such as Hillary. It is a way to funnel funds to them.

That’s like giving in to terrorists on blackmail, which is just what will happen, the ante will keep going up to keep the violence down.

I cannot imagine in a room full of supposed adults, anyone thought this was a good idea. The fact that it was voted by unanimous vote is stunning. Even for California. Not one clear thinking person in the room...not one.

Fellowship was launched, 72 percent of the Fellows have not been suspected for new gun crimes since becoming a Fellow.

Maybe 28% are suspected of new gun crimes, and the rest have been arrested and convicted of new gun crimes. That is the percentages I would expect to see.

You know with liberals you have to really read between the lines...

Yea, that’ll work. Pay people who work at breaking the law to keep the peace of the law. So, to get paid there will need to be law breaking.

How about using the $1.5 million to arm the law abiding to shoot the law breakers?

and the rest have been arrested and convicted

Good point. They are no longer suspects after they have been convicted.
