The Senate on Monday night unanimously passed a resolution condemning white nationalists, white supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan, and neo-Nazis, calling on the Trump administrationnamely Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Department of Homeland Securityto investigate all acts of violence, intimidation, and domestic terrorism by White supremacists, White nationalists, neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan, and associated groups.
The resolution is seen as backlash from President Trumps ambiguous response to the violence in Charlottesville last August, in which a 32-year-old woman who was killed by a neo-Nazi who drove into a crowd of demonstrators. Trump blamed both sides for the violence, and later suggested there were many nice people on both sides, including white supremacists and neo-Nazis.
In response, the resolution urges the President and his administration to speak out against hate groups that espouse racism, extremism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and White supremacy; and use all resources available to the President and the Presidents Cabinet to address the growing prevalence of those hate groups in the United States.
The resolution was introduced by Sen. Mark R. Warner, D-VA, Sen. Tim Kaine, D-VA, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-CT, Sen. Cory Gardner, R-CO, Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-GA, and Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-AK.
Excellent point!
So what now? The resolution has no legal force. It doesn’t require anyone to do anything. It’s just another meaningless theatrical gesture designed for purely political purposes.
Now the Republicans — assuming they had the balls — need to introduce an identical resolution condemning the left-wing extremist groups we all know and love. Call it Act II in this posturing kabuki show.
Meanwhile, important work goes begging.
Not to defend “white supremacy” in any way, but there are several other groups equally as deserving of condemnation as well, and I would certainly put “Antifa” in that category, along with “black supremacy” Black Lives Matter.
There were no good guys at Charlottesville. Just like Donald Trump said, “from many sides”.
What a bunch of morons.
More losing. The election seems so long ago.
Yeah, all 47 of 'em!
Yes, thank you so much senators, for taking time to address this burning issue in American life. How many organized white supremacists, neo-Nazis, KKK, white power or whatever you want to call these groups even exist in the USA? 100,000 people, if that?
If these people are trying to make trouble or breaking the law, they can be dealt with easily by law enforcement. But we appreciate your pointless virtue signaling, senators.
Nope, no condemnation of them.
Only the White Middle Class is targeted, ONCE AGAIN!
The old Aztlan site was a fringe Left site that was vicously anti-U.S. Haven't checked this site out yet.
I want folks to know it's out there, and what some of these people advocate for.
Profiles in courage....ha!
They couldn’t even pass a resolution attacking pedophilia...
Why didn’t they condemn black supremacists and homosexual supremacists?
They must approve of black supremacists and homosexual supremacists!
IN YOUR FACE WHITE SUPREMACISTS!
Both of you!
Untrue. The woman, Heather Heyer, who was 5' 3", 285 lbs and a menthol chain smoker, died of a "heart attack" according to her own mother. Not any blunt force trauma.
How very brave of them. #donothinglosers
That is the real problem. Race is being used for politics instead of truthfulness. I mean this more than ever DC and Congress needs to be blown apart. These folks leading our country divide us to stay in power. I would not set on a jury and vote to convict anyone that destroyed DC. God forgive me but this is old and uncalled for.
You are correct. We have gutless leadership in America.
It’s a resolution....not legislation...
no budget, no health care reform, no tax reform, no nothing. But they’ve got time to pass a resolution against ‘the other indigenous’ people of America - the Caucasians?
The Nazis suck, the KKK sucks, the white supremacists suck, the black supremacists suck, the islam supremacists suck, the Mexican supremacists suck, but I’ve got a big problem with the ‘white nationalism’ being included since we are a Caucasian country and one of the very few countries in the world where Caucasians have sanctuary. This bill condemns pride in our heritage as an American, as racist.
Indeed. A recent mayor of Jackson, Mississippi was part of a black separatist group that had called for the creation of a Black Nationalist homeland here, to be centered on the Mississippi Delta region and carved out of the "Lower 48". That group ad the usual cross-over to Black Panthers, etc. Did the U.S. Senate raise an eyebrow at that? I don't believe so.
