If you have U-verse prepare for AT&T to try and force you to accept DirecTV instead.
They save something like $13/month per subscriber by delivering the programming via satellite instead of over wired cables. They are putting the full-court press on to get you to accept a dish.
yes we have DTV... just the very basic pkg... wife insisted even though i hardly watch it...
DirectTV is hands down a better product than Comcast.
We dropped it though in an effort to wade toward cost/cord cutting. Went back to a low level Comcast package, we were paying them for internet anyway. Man I forgot how bad Comcast sucks.
That's a joke. After YEARS of copper wire problems, I subscribed to Uverse. Still problems. Tech conference suggested Bonded Pair to fix the problem. Installed. Still problems. Next tech suggested the solution - "Uninstall the bonded pair. The bad line is disrupting the good line." Still problems. Thank you AT&T. Maybe I should emigrate to a hi-tech country like India.
It seems that most of my neighbors are on the 2.4 connection (you can see them listed when things get real S L O W) and that is when I make sure to be on the higher one. I think the cell phones, tablets, etc. are usually connected even though not being used at the time.
The problem is that the Providers want too much money for stuff I do not want, all inconveniently put together in bundles. The modern generations will not put up with that and are seeking other, any, alternatives. The providers need to appoint some teenage nerds as advisers and listen to them and act on their advice. Providers are currently run by ‘last century’ management.
and the fake news Russia ratings bubble just popped :P
U-Verse uses the old copper wires; bonded pair uses both copper wires.
I worked for a year for the company att contracted their U-Verse customer service out to. What a snake pit that was. They had no reference material on their own system. Imagine tech support Googling the system they were servicing.
Yesterday, we signed up for streaming HBO for one month via Amazon for the grand total of $15 in order to watch the new season of GoT. After we're done, it's trivial to bring up our AMZ prime account and cancel the service.
While this is great and convenient for us, the larger macro 'picture' (pun intended) is that non-internet subscription cable is dead, dead, dead. Like any cascade function, the initial movement is slow, but then it gains momemtum, and then reaches a deluge. Losing 'only' 4m subscribers/year will be looked back on fondly when it reaches 50m per year. At that point, the party is over in 2-3 years. Just like that.
Fox Island (8 miles from GH). Comcast, Centurytel, and Dish are the ones I know about. We had Centurytel for both landline and internet, but dropped their internet for Comcast which was faster and more reliable. Kept the C'tel phone due to flaky electrical service during storms. No experience w. Dish.
"Last night I ordered Amazon Fire Sticks and subscribed to a free trial of VUE - plus ordered 2 digital antennas. So sick of paying Comcast to watch the few channels I like. I have Century Link internet which works well here. Also hava a Magic Jack land line that is almost free."
Given the good reviews of the Amazon stuff on this thread, I may give those a look. Agree completely re price and only using a few channels.
Gig Harbor area is a great place to live, and Fox Island even more so. Highly recommended. Been here twenty years...zero problems. We are looking to move back "south" (Texas) to be closer to family in our "declining" years.
My folks were paying for 12 Mbps, but only getting 0.5 to 1.5 Mbps. Told them to call Centurylink. The tech came out, noted that something the company had done had interfered with their signal (something about a new filter near the hub for their service). The guy fixed it, and since it was on the company's side of the box, it cost my parents nothing. Call and complain.
If you're paying for more than what you're getting, tell them a little less is reasonable. I know folks who live in the boonies, and have service via Centurylink, they get at least 5 Mpbs, which should be good enough for most anything you need to do, unless you have more than one device streaming at a time. You're only getting about 15% of the base Centurylink plan. That's a lotta bull.
“Gig Harbor area is a great place to live, and Fox Island even more so.”
Quit that! The whole state is filled with zombie socialists and it rains 370 days a year!!
Yeah, but this is a fellow Freeper we're talkin' 'bout.
Mmmm I don’t pay for anything. It’s all available on the net at no fee and no membership crap. No Roku no nothing. Plug my iPad into the tv and wow! There it all is.
What I don’t understand is why people are so proud of cutting the cable cord but are still paying for services that are behind on releases and charging for stuff that’s available at no cost.
Well they’re paying bottom line. Where they live .7 is the fastest possible, something to do with copper wire. They live over three miles from the place where the signal comes into town and were told that the fastest they can get is .7mps over copper wire which I guess they’re saying the phone line.
Yes. Do notice time of day too.

I've got Comcast/Xfinity & their speed is quite good and customer service has improved immensely to where it is merely bad.
Other than those points, I agree fully with your post.
Game of Thrones ended and won’t come back for 2 years. Flagship, exclusive program. I intend to drop Comcast as well.
I just shut off sloooow CenturyLink DSL and replaced it with www.freedata.io for 10x faster internet via local Sprint cell phone towers. Cheaper also.
