Comcast Xfinity Sees Huge Subscriber Loss, Shares Plunge

Comcast, the parent company of MSNBC, saw its shares plunge this past week as the company said it expected a record drop-off of subscribers for its Xfinity cable and internet service.

The selloff of shares began on Thursday when Matthew Strauss, a Comcast vice-president for Xfinity, told a Merrill Lynch media conference that the company was bracing for a dramatic loss of 100,000 to 150,000 subscribers in the third quarter of this year.

Shares had closed Wednesday at over $41 a share, but Thursday’s announcement led to a 7 percent price decline -- the biggest drop in share price since 2011. Comcast shares closed Friday at $38.21.

Comcast owns MSNBC, the left-leaning network that has taken a strident editorial position against President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans.

Xfinity is particularly threatened by AT&T and Verizon who have been targeting communities that Comcast services, often with less expensive options for cable, telephone and wireless services.

I hope all government-enforced monopolies go bankrupt.

Cable has been losing about 4 million per year.

We cut cable last year. Best decision. There is far more content outside of cable.

I wish I had them... all I can get here is crappy ATT that goes out all the time, despite numerous attempts to “fix” it...

I dropped them a few months ago when I was laid off - too expensive when on a tight budget.

I did pick up DirecTV. Much cheaper, but not as good.

Just go digital broadcast which is free above and beyond the relatively inexpensive antenna, then streaming for other content. Cheaper and better than DirecTV, but a little more effort.

All that money spent buying NBC when it turns out they should have thought about buying Sprint.

Comcast legal department: single largest (by dollar amount) group of bundlers for Obama’s re-election campaign. Had to be big for Hillary!, too.

Comcast is a true American enemy. Stockholders promote Anti-American propaganda.

An MSNBC or NBC propagandist is your enemy
A worker in a Comcast pick up is your enemy

I will forgive subscribers that must rely on the Comcast high speed internet

I use Spectrum/TWC Internet w/ROKU (Premier+) and SlingBlue.

Superior to the old CableTV subscription...and MUCH less expensive,

Welcome to the world of CenturyLink CenturyStink). Same thing happens to us with them. I hate their commercials about speed; we can only get .7mbs download - no good for anything but texts and slow page loading.

Complain enough and they’ll stop the speed bottleneck and limit bandwidth like Mediacom by booting people off at random.

What, digital broadcast or streaming? Digital broadcast is just like the old analog broadcast as far as how it works, just a digital signal with antenna to receive it on a digital tv or an older CRT tv with a set top box. Streaming comes off of the internet, usually via a service such as Apple TV, Roku, Hulu, quite a few different ones, pick the one(s) that have the content you want. Monthly subscription but far, far cheaper than any cable or satellite service.

Several months ago my Comcast bill increased to $250 a month. I will be the first to admit I carry too much in services (4 boxes, DVR, Premium stations) but still, $250 was excessive. I contacted Verizon who gave me a rate of $180. Comcast would not budge from their excessive price so I now have Verizon as my internet and cable provider. Last week a Comcast guy came to my front door and offered the same for $120. I told him to come back in a few years.
