Trump signs order to weaken Obamacare, boost bare-bones insurance

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to weaken the Obamacare law and make it easier for Americans to buy bare-bones health insurance plans, but the action faces possible legal challenges.

Stymied in Congress by the failure of Senate Republicans to pass legislation to dismantle Democratic former President Barack Obama’s signature domestic policy achievement, Trump’s order marks his administration’s latest effort to undermine the law without action by lawmakers.

Trump’s order gives people more access to plans that do not cover essential health benefits such as maternity and newborn care, prescription drugs, and mental health and addiction treatment. Obamacare requires most small business and individual health plans to cover those benefits.

Trump wants to make it easier for small businesses to band together as associations across state lines to buy cheaper, less regulated health plans with fewer benefits.

The order also seeks to change an Obama-era limit on the time span people can use short-term health insurance plans, which are cheaper but cover few medical benefits. Those plans are currently limited to three months.

They can’t hold themselves back! On the 4th word in the headline, they started with the bias.

Yep - Trump doing what the Congress has worked so hard to prevent ever since they started insisting that insurers HAD to cover a litany of possible problems and provide a lot of "services" (giveaways) that people used to handle themselves without blinking any eye, and not tailor plans to meet people's needs.

When I was growing up, we still had doctors making house-calls...

And my dad would cut the doc a check for his fee before he left the house.

To quote Archie and Edith Bunker - "Those were the days"....

Still had the ice man coming around in the mid '50s - we used to follow the truck in the Summer and the guy would knock a block off into the street and help break it up so we could grab chunks to suck on.

Agreed, more WINNING though this should have been done on January 20. Well better late than never, and just in time for average voter to save $$$$ on 2018 plan.

“less benefits” = no mandatory tranny care, no maternity care for guys and older adults, no rectal repair coverage for Pelosi’s constituents, etc.

Just kidding on the last one... and yet reuters wants us to believe this is “bare bones”.

This merely enforces a pre-existing law by interpreting groups in a much broader way.

Are you that much older than me? I’m 75 and I never saw a doctor make a house call. Maybe it’s because I grew up in the southwest. Was it a big city thing?

to many people, maternity care is not essential, nor is drug addiction treatment or mental health treatment. So why should they be required to pay for the kind of treatment that they don’t require?

“And my dad would cut the doc a check for his fee before he left the house.”

I remember the doctor coming to see my grandmother.
My mom paid the bill with a fresh baked pecan pie.
Her baked goods were legendary.

***

1: It was Bush; what do you expect?

2: On a slightly less snarky note, OCare gives a LOT of power to the executive, so all that President Trump is doing is exercising the power that the law gave him.

Likewise, it makes no sense to charge senior citizens for birth control or maternity coverage. Obamacare is just plain stupid in forcing people to pay for insurance they don't need and can't use. Pure pandering to a specific group of voters.
