64 percent of Americans support legalizing marijuana, 51 percent of Republicans
The Hill and Gallup ^

A new Gallup poll shows growing support for marijuana legalization, with 64 percent of Americans now in favor of the measure.

The number is the highest level of support in nearly half a century of surveying adults on the issue, according to Gallup. Support has steadily increased in recent years, with the latest figure up 4 percentage points over last year and up 14 points from 2011.

The poll also showed a majority of Republicans favoring legalization for the first time, with 51 percent expressing support. That number is up 9 percentage points from last year, according to Gallup.

Anyone who doesn't consider it a state's rights issue might be a nanny-statist with some non-liberal political views, but sure as hell is not a conservative in the way that anyone who reverences the Constitution would consider one to be.

And I oppose calling alcoholism a disease as well, when it is a CHOICE. But you can see what happened there; it’s officially a disease. Opioid addiction (from recreational use) is now being designated a disease as well. Will pot not follow the same route?

Sugar leads to fat leads to a bad back leads to prescription pain pills to illegal pain pills to heroin.

I know many pot users that have never moved past pot. I don’t know many heroin users (not my crowd) but I firmly believe that doctors prescribing pain pills has lead to a heroin epidemic where I live.

That's the objective. Vending machine narcotics. As an aside, I am curious as to why FR has been infested with all these addicted Libertarians? Do they not have their own legitimate venue to spout their stoned nonsense?

You are such a square, just another narc freak cop-loving bootlicker who wants to keep simple stoners down. They ain't hurtin' NOBODY, you Herbert. Why you so uptight, man? I could pluck you and you'd sound like a guitar string.

Heroin is an epidemic in many schools. It’s not because they got hooked on it because of pain pills.

It is cheap, available and gives them a much better high than weed.

So the hippies and liberals want to ban and restrict tobacco because it is a major health risk but they want to legalize weed because it is a harmless plant. Now I get it.

When I look at my local police station arrests for the last week. over 50% of all arrests have this description.

Poss of Marij < 2oz Bond type secure $1000

So what are the local municipalities going to do for their revenues? Because speeding tickets are not going to fund the local swimming pool upgrade.

Ah, the conservative, small-govt, Constitutional loving FRiends, yet again, love THEIR flavor of Fascism.

War on Drugs success? NO! But *I* like it anyway...
Enumerated powers? NO! But *I* like it anyway...
Trampled Rights and run-away govt?! YES! But *I* like it anyway...

At least the (L) are on the right side of the debate. State matter. Prosecute CRIME\violation of Rights else, keep govt FAR FAR away and OUT of the mix.

Same ones crying re: welfare? I concur: KILL WELFARE in any/all forms. EITC, Sect8, WIC, MediXYZ, tax breaks, etc. Course, we all know plenty around here *think* they ‘paid’ into/for something.

Small-govt, conserv.\const., indeed.

51% of Republicans and 64% of Americans actually support the removal of Tyrannical law? How refreshing.

Contraband Law is inherently Tyrannical, inasmuch as it represents nanny-state authoritarianism, threatening citizens with imprisonment merely for possessing the wrong plant, medicine, liquid spirits, or chemical—and doing so in the absence of any infringement on any individual's Rights.

Once people can be conditioned to accept this form of arbitrary law, there is virtually no limit to state power, which can be imposed either legislatively or by edict—supported by a mob—or bureaucrats—or a demagogue—or any combination of the three.

Similar to prior restraint of Free Speech, such a legal philosophy is utterly antithetical to principles of American Liberty. While it's a favorite tool of the Left in America, it is also resorted to by the self-righteous Right, and for similar reasons—control of those who think differently.

Of course, one must also support the ever-expanding Police State necessary to enforce such law—no knock warrants, warrantless searches conducted without probable cause, asset forfeiture, trampling of privacy rights under the Fourth Amendment, and so on.

It's both comical and disturbing to me that anyone who calls himself a conservative who believes in minimal government could simultaneously think that his fellow citizen deserves be criminalized and imprisoned for merely possessing the wrong plant—one of God's own creations!

If an individual or mob on the Right is to be tolerant of Arbitrary Law when it suits their self-righteous purposes, then logically it must also be tolerated when elements of the Left do the same.

The notion that crime only exists when it involves infringing on the rights of other individuals is therefore dispensed with, leaving in its place a philosophy which allows for a Nanny-State with virtually limitless power—imposed either by dictatorial leaders, or, when convenient, relying on majority Tyranny and/or mob rule.

Such a philosophy is—on its face—entirely incompatible with a nation which is supposed to have been founded on the idea of maximum Liberty. Instead, the People are essentially left with the "scraps", enjoying only those rights and freedoms which have not (yet) been whittled away by nanny-staters who believe in arbitrary law—the "least common denominator" of Liberty, so to speak.

No thanks—I'll take actual Freedom, with all of its warts, challenges, and annoyances—informed by education and (when necessary) rehabilitation—not incarceration.

Nanny-state rationalizations will always be precisely that: shortcuts which open the door to an unfettered State—a monstrous entity which can imprison any citizen at any time for one fake "crime" or another...

As I’ve said before, marijuana prohibition is dead in America.

Even St Jude would tell you to forget it.

Before I retired I had mixed feelings about legalization. In a tight Obama-infected job market, more stoners meant less competition for me, especially in my field where random drug testing is SOP.

States can legalize all they want, but a Federal bust for dope is still pretty much like a dishonorable discharge, meaning f***ed for life.

Oh well, people will make their own choices.

I am an old guy that has seen the progression over 6 decades. In the 60s people experimented with drugs. But illegality and punishment deterred many folks. Now there is simply no deterrent.

I know many pot users that have moved past pot. It is not the pot us that is the problem, but rather the speed, pain meds and heroin that are.

As I’ve said before, marijuana prohibition is dead in America.

Until it's repealed at the federal level, it's very much alive.

I disagree. It starts with buying pills that were stolen from parents or other sources from a drug dealer. Once you can’t afford the expensive pills you move to heroin.

Very few people start off wanting to do heroin the first time. They start by doing pills, even in high school.

I don’t think weed is harmless, but it is all relative. Alcohol kills. Heroin kills. Meth kills. Weed? munchies and long term cardiovascular damage, probably.
