Catalan Parliament Declares Independence From Spain

The Catalan regional parliament has voted to declare independence from Spain, just as the Spanish government appears set to impose direct rule.

The move was backed 70-10 in a ballot boycotted by opposition MPs.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy earlier told senators direct rule was needed to return "law, democracy and stability" to Catalonia.

The crisis began when Catalans backed independence in a disputed vote earlier this month.

The Catalan government said that of the 43% of potential voters who took part in the referendum, 90% were in favour of independence. But Spain's Constitutional Court had ruled the vote illegal.

In all, the motion declaring independence was approved with 70 in favour, 10 against and two abstentions in the 135-seat chamber.

Immediately afterwards, Mr Rajoy called for all Spaniards to remain calm, promising to "restore legality" to Catalonia.

Spain's Senate is still to vote on whether for the first time to enact Article 155 of the Spanish constitution, which empowers the government to take "all measures necessary to compel" a region in case of a crisis.

It would enable Madrid to fire Catalan leaders, and take control of the region's finances, police and public media.

That point keeps getting lost, this whole thing was done outside the normal election system. There is no Catalan mandate for independence. Instead, this is a prescription for violence and civil war.

This is without a doubt a REJECTION of Globalism!

And, unfortunately, an affirmation of far-left anarchism.

Catalonian nationalists are Communists.

They are tired of being told to pay even more taxes for the Migrants who will not even assimilate and go on welfare

I recently visited Barcelona. Migrants are everywhere and apparently are welcome. So Catalans don't seem to have a problem paying for them.

“That’s a terrible basis on which to found a country. I don’t think they’ve thought this through.”

We did it with far less participation.

“Also, are Catalans prepared to fight a seven year long war? “

Seems they are. Why are you so against their independence??

If they manage to make this stick, I wonder if this will stir up the Basques again.

Independence is almost always fueled by taxation without representation or commensurate benefit.

In this case, we have a nation that joined Spain by marriage and not vote. They have maintained their language and culture and long to be free.

I welcome them to freedom.

The old world order never likes to be disrupted. There will be birth pangs.

Why are you so against their independence??

First, this was a highly un-democratic process. Fewer than 40% of Catalans have expressed the desire to be independent of Spain. Instead this is being railroaded through by a self-interested clique. Second I happen to love Spain and hate to see it torn apart. Third, the world already has enough countries.

Globalism IS a money issue.

Furthermore, the word “Globalism” is a modern day word for “Colonialism”.

40% of all the taxes collected for Spain come from Catalan. They have Resorts, Casinos and touristy attractions in the South.

They are tired of being told to pay even more taxes for the deadbeat Migrants who will not even assimilate and go on welfare

It’s a taxation issue.
How is that arrogant?

Edmund Burke was appalled by the French revolution but supported our desire for independence.
If Spanish civil war I is any help in predicting what might happen, yeah, this could get ugly.

“Wait, 90% of 43% means that fewer then 4 out of 10 Catalans have declared the desire to be independent of Spain. That’s a terrible basis on which to found a country. I don’t think they’ve thought this through.’

Well it worked out for us.

“Historian Robert Calhoon said the consensus of historians is that between 40 and 45 percent of the white population in the Thirteen Colonies supported the Patriots’ cause, between 15 and 20% supported the Loyalists, and the remainder were neutral or kept a low profile.”

I doubt the assorted pinkos in the Catalan independence movement are much worried about “refugees.”

That’s like their top issue. The Pinkos are Spain and not Catalan.

You have it reversed. Spain is all about Socialism and the E.U.

If the Catalonians do not request to be part of NATO, they will not remain independent for long and their leaders will be killed or imprisoned.

There will most likely be a war of succession.

I would caution against coming to that conclusion. The city state known as catalunya Has long been the power center of the left in Spain. It was the Soviet union’s bastion in Spain.

the primary drivers of globalization are corporate oligarchists and their socialist drones. The catalans aren’t protesting the EU. They’re saying they want their own seat there. Globalists want Catalan independence. Without the EU, “catalunya” would be impossible. Spain would intervene. The Barcelona city state will owe its existence to the EU and be its most loyal subject. When countries try to exit ithe EU n the future, don’t be surprised when they too develop secessionist cities/regions ... quietly backed by the EU and globalists.

Nation states are the impediments to global government. Not city states. The devolution from nation states to city states greases the way for globalization bc coercion of city states is much easier.

Yeah, I have it reversed. All the nose wearing Catalans on TV right are the solid conservatives and Madrid are the socialists. Got it.

Be careful the friends you keep, FRiend.

If 45% of Americans wanted independence when it was dangerous to do so I suspect that the number would have been much higher if they could have done so safely. OTOH, Catalans aren’t being oppressed. Which of the causes that impelled separation in 1776 are being inflicted on Catalans?
