Iceland just made it illegal to pay men more than women

A European country has become the first in the world to make it illegal to pay men more than women.

In Iceland, firms that employ more than 25 people must now obtain a government certificate demonstrating pay equality, under new rules that kicked in on 1 January.

Those who fail to show equality will face penalty fines, according to broadcaster Al Jazeera.

The law was announced on March 8 on International Women's Day 2017 as part of the Nordic country's drive to eradicate the gender pay gap by 2022.

It comes after the UK reported a 16.9% pay gap between men and women in 2017.

Iceland, which has a population of around 323,000 people, has been ranked the best in the world for gender equality by the World Economic Forum for nine years in a row.

Dagny Osk Aradottir Pind, of the Icelandic Women's Rights Association, told Al Jazeera: "The legislation is basically a mechanism that companies and organisations ... evaluate every job that's being done, and then they get a certification after they confirm the process if they are paying men and women equally."

"It's a mechanism to ensure women and men are being paid equally.

I saw that but I am wondering after reading it if this is just a blanket deal with no adjusting for experience, job classification etc etc.

If it’s in the article I did not see it.

...........well........”if the job is the same”...........hmmmmm...............if I’m a housecleaning lady I could take the positions that 1. I work at the same company. 2. I show up at the same time. 3. I work harder. 4. I have kids to feed, clothe, educate just like him. 4. My car costs just as much to operate as his. 5. my hospitalization insurance is the same as his. 6. Oh, and their favorite, “equal pay is a “human right”. And, on and on endlessly.

Based upon the too brief article, it just seems that Iceland is opening up a job enrichment plan for lawyers more than anything else.

More absurd regulation.

Now companies of 26 and more employees need to create reports and the government needs to create a bureocracy to read them.

And on top of that, this is a sexist, overbearing regulation. What if two employees have the same job title and function.. and one is more capable than the other? Under a fair environment the more capable employee would earn more.

However, now the company would be forced to pay the less capable employee equal pay to the other, but only if it turns out to be a woman, but not the other way around.

Seems to me very discriminatory and sexist.

I have an idea then...let us also require that companies not pay women more than men. Also not pay people with dark skin more than those with lighter skin, or those with lighter skin more than those with darker. Also not pay shorter people more than taller people, or taller people more than shorter people. And of course not pay people with blue eyes more than those with brown or those with brown more than those with blue.

In fine, to guarantee there is not a wage gap for reasons that do not have to do with merit, will require all people be paid the same regardless of merit.
