Iceland just made it illegal to pay men more than women

A European country has become the first in the world to make it illegal to pay men more than women.

In Iceland, firms that employ more than 25 people must now obtain a government certificate demonstrating pay equality, under new rules that kicked in on 1 January.

Those who fail to show equality will face penalty fines, according to broadcaster Al Jazeera.

The law was announced on March 8 on International Women's Day 2017 as part of the Nordic country's drive to eradicate the gender pay gap by 2022.

It comes after the UK reported a 16.9% pay gap between men and women in 2017.

Iceland, which has a population of around 323,000 people, has been ranked the best in the world for gender equality by the World Economic Forum for nine years in a row.

Dagny Osk Aradottir Pind, of the Icelandic Women's Rights Association, told Al Jazeera: "The legislation is basically a mechanism that companies and organisations ... evaluate every job that's being done, and then they get a certification after they confirm the process if they are paying men and women equally."

"It's a mechanism to ensure women and men are being paid equally.

Whatever happened to that west coast company who made a big splash when the CEO did that? I don’t think it ended well.

I would be be a strong proponent of immaturity leave. If I hate my boss, and can’t stand to see him/her, I should be able to take a couple of days off!

This will also mean the end of raises or bonuses for any man ... what employer would want to deal with the lawsuits sure to come when some woman didn’t get the same, regardless of whether she deserved one?

Men and women are only paid the same if their work is of equal quality. This is explained if you read the article about Iceland. There are things taken into consideration when equality of salaries is determined. Longevity, time on and in the position, quality of work, productivity, and even things such as attendance and promptness.

This law is nothing but another feel good law passed by politicians to make them look good.

Thank you for these details. I am reassured that some logic and sanity were kept in the law.

........well, I think I read the entire article sandwiched between a thousand advertisements and I did not see any “equal pay” for “equal work” and “equal experience”.

So, are we to believe that in Iceland a company that has a “man” with a PHD and 20 years experience in his field must be paid the same as the lady that cleans the office?

From the article:

evaluate every job that's being done, and then they get a certification after they confirm the process if they are paying men and women equally."

If the job is the same, men and women get paid equally for doing it. Seems clear, and fair, enough.

This is crazy. This is going to result in a form of wage fixing.

Each employee, man or woman, should have his/her salary determined individually based on the nature of the job, level of experience, ability to perform the job, etc.

The only way for this to be implemented is for everyone to know what everyone else is making. Indians seem to be OK with this, but Westerners tend to want to keep their salaries to themselves.

I see a sea of lawsuits.

Even if the job is the same one employee might be much more productive in that job than another either because of experience or personal virtues such as diligence, etc.

Each person should get paid based on his/her own merits.

I can see low level entry workers all getting the same pay, but even then some should get raises quicker if they show more initiative.

The headline got it wrong.

ICELAND ADDS NEW LAW REINFORCING BUREAUCRACY is more accurate.

You did see the part about certification forms for companies with 25+ employees, right?

Oh, agreed. Personal endeavour should be rewarded, but you can’t judge that from the sex of the worker. Equal base pay for the same job, then performance bonuses and/or promotions on top for the high-fliers.
