It started with a cold, and then it turned deadly.

The grieving family of Dylan Winnik of West Palm Beach, Fla. is in shock after their 12-year old son died Tuesday from complications related to the flu.

Dylan’s family said cold symptoms developed just a day after the seventh-grader was playing at a birthday party on Sunday, according to a report from Local10 News. By Tuesday, his condition worsened and a neighbor called 911. When sheriff's deputies arrived at the home, Dylan already had died.

Family member Mike Medwi told the Palm Beach Post that the boy had not gotten a flu shot.

The urgent care type clinics are really awesome and normally run pretty efficiently.

Interesting. Thanks for that info. I just ordered elderberry syrup which is supposed to boost the immune system. My IGG (core of our immune system) runs 1/2 of the low normal levels, so I’m staying home till this monster passes over.

God help your Mom. Their immune system becomes so frail at that age. May she somehow find some peace.

I am an herbalist with a small clientel, self educated, and also read up obsessively about flu starting in late 2005 for a few years.

Great, since you've been learning about herbs for several years, I won't have to go into so much detail.

I've made elderberry tincture with 80 proof vodka and still have some made in 2006. Some sites say alcohol based tinctures are good for about five years, and other sites say they're good indefinitely. I've also purchased Sambucol liquid to have on hand. However, I've never really used elderberry as a preventative or for any illness.

I had the real flu once at around age twelve, and haven't had the flu since, and haven't had a flu shot since the Naval Reserve gave me one in the early '70s.

The herb I've found most useful in recent years is boneset. Several winters in the past I'd have what I term as flu symptoms a time or two: always body aches and some fatigue, and maybe a low fever and some congestion, but not always. Each time I had those symptoms, a few cups of boneset tea knocked out the symptoms within about 12 to 24 hours. Before, those symptoms would stay with me for days and I'd use OTC cold remedies. - No way of knowing if I'd contracted a flu virus, or some other virus those times.

You probably know that boneset is the old Native American, sweat out the fever herb and the early settlers learned about it from them. And boneset is credited with protecting those who used it during the 1918 flu pandemic.

For about twelve years, I've taken a D3K2 tablet that contains 1,000 IUs of Vitamin D. As Vitamin D has been discussed more and more in recent years, I started taking an addition 5,000 unit capsule about every other day for a couple of years during winter, and am taking it every day this winter. Since I started the additional Vitamin D, I haven't had those flu symptoms during winter and have used the boneset less, occasionally for simple congestion.

If I should have the full blown flu now, I'd go to the doctor, but also take mega doses of Vitamin C, more Vitamin D, and drink boneset tea every few hours. I might add elderberry extract to that (I have a current bottle of that, Vitacost brand).

Some sites say that elderberry will not prevent the flu, others say it will. Since it has been effective in reducing flu symptoms, it makes sense that it'd be beneficial if one were already taking it when exposed to the virus.

Have you read anything about using boneset and elderberry simultaneously for the flu? I've read a site or two that say they can be used together.

No offense, but Avoiding contact is an excellent strategy.

Some people think the flu is simply an inconvenience. He might comment.

Some poor kid just died of streptococcus after getting stitches in his knee after falling, evidently the hospital killed him by poor houskeeping /sterilization proceedures

our healthcare system is a shambles””

No it isn’t. It is not possible to sterilize a hospital. Sick people bring in infectious agents and some are airborne. Hospitals are collection points for SICK PEOPLE.

The flu is no laughing matter, but to think that having everybody get the flu shot is going to save us, is.

The flu shot is barely effective this year and the same last year.

That is par.

Several of my FB friends got the “flu” after getting the vaccine only they got the “stomach flu” which is not the flu at all.

My doctor gets the vaccine every year but gets the flu every 6 years or so because he is exposed so often. The vaccine will not prevent you from getting the flu. It only lessens the chances and the symptoms.

“Medical malpractice is third leading cause of death in the US.”

How many death certificates list “medical malpractice” as a reason?

I have five highly placed sources who tell me it is a genetically modified virus.

The current flu strain that is going around right now? Genetically modified by whom, Monsanto or somebody?

“I’ve made CS and used it for some things and it’s a useful thing to have around but does nothing against viruses.”

It cures cancer and makes barren women become fertile again. It cures Typhus, Polio and Fusarium Wilt. It kills Tobacco Hornworms just by speaking the name near one.

Might have picked up Noro at the doc's office, or it might have been from the flu. Since you mentioned the gut, a fascinating abstract on the subject of gut-related flu, influenza flu, complications...

I understand that it’s important to take vitamin K2 in conjunction with D3. I need to do that.
