More than 100 American colleges and universities house Confucius Institutes, centres of Chinese language and cultural teaching funded and staffed in part with instructors screened by a Chinese government-affiliated entity known as Hanban.
The Confucius Institutes may seem to many to be benign outposts offering cultural events programming and non-credit courses in introductory Chinese, calligraphy or Tai Chi, but for nearly as long as the Confucius Institutes have been around more than 10 years now theyve been controversial.

It smells like an excuse here. Mandarin can be used to indoctrinate anywhere, if it can be used in China.
Why are U. S.-China relations important on a citizen to citizen level? I do not personally know one Chinese person.

Whatever the wishes and rationale are, here are the facts: the right in the US is not going to be happy with anything giving lessons in the US that has official ties to the Chinese government.
To really let the issue be debated through in an American way will require the whole thing be thrown open for view in English. But to imagine that the Chinese government will out of sheer Chinese historical integrity resist the temptation to do what it has been accused already of doing, seems implausible. After all, Chinese Communism doesn’t care what China looked like before the Maoist revolution, except to resolve not to return to it. But that past was a product of Confucianism. Why shouldn’t it be on the table too? Why can’t Confucianism be allowed to sweep Marxism off the table as an inimical thing? Any Confucianism that could do that, would be opposed by the Chinese government.

China needs to revert to its Taoist past, and reject the great collectivists Confucius and Mao who set the country on the wrong path.
