Sen. Pat Roberts: Nobody under 21 should have an AR-15 [GOPe]
Wichita Eagle ^ | Jonathan Shorman

TOPEKA Sen. Pat Roberts supports placing an age restriction on the rifle that was used in a Florida school shooting where 17 people died.

The Kansas Republican said he believes Congress is ready to act and expects President Donald Trump to take the lead.

"This is an opportunity, if you look at these youngsters who are so emotionally tied in to this grief of losing their friends — but it’s more than gun control. But I think we’re ready as a Congress to actually pass something and I think it’s going to be better background checks. Certainly nobody under 21 should have an AR-15," Roberts told reporters at the Kansas Statehouse.

"I don’t know why anybody would want an AR-15 unless they’re going to take one out on the shooting range."

The call for an age restriction may place Roberts in tension with the National Rifle Association.

18yros can go and kill in war time...they can get abortions and they can get their privates cut off if they so choose... they can drive, fly airplanes and pay taxes and they can go to prison for crime..

but lets forbid them from drinking, smoking, and caring a gun.because they just are not old enough for that stuff...

Look, I am against criminals and the mentally ill from having guns...

go into the inner city and take all the guns away and we would cut our country's murder rate by probably 80%....

but that would be "rasist"......

The Senate needs a cleansing of RINOs - that is this country's biggest problem right now as this contingent is preventing any worthwhile change in D.C.

Sick of these A-Holes in congress not knowing what our rights are all about. The second amendment is not about hunting or shooting ranges or even wanting a gun.

Held hostage like other things by federal funding, so they all raised it.

I'll take an M1A.

Beyond the Second Amendment (which the 1968 Gun Control Act trashes anyway) concerns, they might be better marksmen if they spent a little more time learning how to shoot rifles with conventional stocks.

“I’m generally not adamantly opposed to this but I would also change voting age to 21 as well.”

That would take a constitutional amendment, and there are enough Rats to defeat it.

No one under 75 should be permitted to have an abortion, then.

If that state has an age limit of 21, it stands to reason parent would have to sign, as in getting married, joining military, or alcohol, etc. That is way it used to be, and still should be...I have not heard of laws stating it different. Wonder how many states are OF AGE AT 21? or 18? Is voting State law or Federal Law? Wikipedia says:

I disagree with Sen Roberts

If you are old enough o die for your country with an M16 in your hands. You are old enough to own an AR15

On the other hand, I have no problem requiring anyone wishing to purchase a fire arm to attend a basic gun safety course and fire arm training course before they are allowed to posses a gun.

Even that requirement is not supported by fact because fire arm accidents are very rare, even with the almost universal lack of training for firearms owners these days.

Any kind of unlawful use of rifles is so rare that more people are killed by lightning strikes than rifles of all types, much less AR15s

Nobody under 21 should have an AR-15.

I AGREE.

And while you're at it, raise the voting age back up to 21.

Kids take longer to GROW UP these days, and MOST NEVER DO. I blame FEMINISM, lack of father figures and other BAD INFLUENCES such as social media.

IT IS WHAT IT IS, FOLKS.

The fedgov bullied them all into 21 using highway funding.

And yet, the fedgov isn't allowed to enforce their own immigration laws in the states. Hypocritical.

We take 18-year olds into the military and send them off to defend this country with weapons that fire full-auto.

The sad fact of the matter is, some human beings are just defective. Has always been thus, and will always be so.
