Florida student mistaken for gunman: 'I knew any move I made would be the end of my life'

As gunshots and screams echoed through his school, Lorenzo Prado said he locked himself in the sound booth at the auditorium at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and prepared to die.

But moments after the gunfire subsided and he thought he was safe, he said he was confronted by six officers pointing guns in his face.

"On the day of the Douglas massacre, I was a victim like everyone else," Prado, 17, said during an emotional news conference today in Tallahasse, the Florida state capital. "But my case was different than all the others because on that day, I was a suspected school shooter."

Prado said he was in the school auditorium when the gunfire broke out about 2:30 p.m. a week ago today. He said he heard screaming and people pounding on the door.

"I run downstairs to see 100 people banging on the door," he said. "I quickly opened the door to let the people in and I see my coach, [Chris] Hixon, running inside for safety."

He said he ran back to the sound booth and locked himself in.

"I was scared, and I ran to the safest place possible, which was the sound booth again," the eleventh-grader said. "I start to pace back and forth because I did not know what was going on -- and the people in the audience saw me. They saw me, and they panicked because I was matching the same description of [suspect] Nikolas Cruz. I had the same

Not just a different world. For many of our young it is a coddled world.

No kid today could take the conditions you did as a youngster. Surviving basic at 17 is an accomplishment.

Surviving a deployment (combat or not) in a war zone is an entirely different matter.

I tip my hat to your courage and strength of character. And as always—welcome home. (with accompanying hand salute)

"I felt guilty for closing the door behind me," he continued. "I felt guilty for startling the audience. I felt guilty for the SWAT members who had to pursue me instead of pursuing the murderer. I felt guilty for not contacting my mother. I felt guilty for Coach Hixon, whose life I thought I saved when he walked inside the auditorium but whose life was ended when he walked out again."

Nancy Pelosi, this is a real example of pathetic.

Open multiple doors each one with a metal detector and when school is in session you lock down to one entrance. They do that with concerts with 65,000 people. I was talking to a security guy today who told me there seems to be this bizarre mentality today that when it comes to schools, putting that kind of security into place is like a certification of a police state EVEN THOUGH just about every government building and sports arena today uses it. But for some reason people lose their shit when it comes to using it for schools and that’s what is causing all these shootings. The killers know it’s a fish in a barrel situation. My theory, if you want to call me crazy, is that the left is deliberately doing this because kids getting shot up gives them the biggest argument for banning guns which is their only agenda. They could care less about saving lives.

Well you could open multiple doors for them to enter in the morning then lock down to one entrance afterwards, but honestly, if it was up to me I would put an end to public education once and for all. It’s absolutely unnecessary in this day and age. Even the poorest families today have access to the internet, they even give you a phone for it at the social services office and that’s all that’s needed for a kid to learn. But it will never happen because they teachers unions are connected at the hip with the Democrap party.

I was matching the same description

The description they seek now is "gun owner", any and all gun owners.

This is all caused by societal ROT, largely gem-driven the past 60 years. Abortion inures people to death of innocents, no religion, violent rap, first-person shooter games on the internet, a 24x7 news cycle that has to be filled with content, a narcissistic “me” generation driven by self-esteem programs and wanting to be famous for 15 minutes, . . .

They are correct. Using this approach is turning our nation into a police state. It's already happening and we are quite far down that road. Lets just say we do this at the school. The shooters would just go to the school and shoot people outside going in or they would pick a different venue like a football game where the security is not hardened at all.

There is a very simple solution to mass shootings but people have there heads so far up their rear ends with liberalism and total ignorance of firearms there is little hope of the real solution ever being implemented.

Bottom line we have taught people to do exactly the wrong thing when a mass shooter goes on a rampage. We have taught people to just wait to die, and they do. A lone gunman is litterally the easiest mass murderer to stop. They can only look one way, they can only shoot one way. Their hands are busy and they are def from firing the first shot so they have almost zero situational awareness. I'm not going to go any further.

Lockdown drills in schools. Teaching our kids to be sitting ducks. Complacent. Easy targets. Don’t fight back. The last two generations have been told not to fight back.

The schools not notifying LE about threats made by students to others.

LE not investigating threats that ARE reported.

Schools required to keep students who threaten other students/people, in the school. No regard to all the normal students and their education/lives.

There’s a ton of issues, with the 2nd A being the least of of the problem/cause.

I used to tell my students (middle/high school), during lockdown drills, this is what we have to do for the “drill” but if it were actually happening, we wouldn’t be sitting ducks and just follow my instructions. They trusted me and I knew they’d follow me.

I told my own kids to do the same. If it’s a “drill” follow the drill protocol and if it’s real, then run/fight. Cell phones are wonderful. They’re out of school now (two still in college) so not an issue anymore in the school setting other than college and it’s been rare for college lockdown.

When my kids were in high school, youngest a year and a half ago, they’d text me when there was a lockdown or shelter in place “drill” to see if it was real and what to do.

We’ve allowed the media/libs to dictate everything for so long I hope we finally stop it when it comes to school shootings.

You are spot on!

The President said the solution must be aggressive. He is right.

One man, even with a gun, is no match for a crowd. Yes a gunman may still be able to get rounds off but shooting with five people on top of you is darn near impossible. The problem is we have trained people run hide and wait to die.

The biggest fear of a mass shooter murderer is being taken alive and held accountable. As soon as they realize people will not just stand there and die and that they will be attacked from every angle the mass shootings will stop immediately. The mass shooter murderer wants to do his evil deed then kill himself, be killed or rarely get away but they do not want to get jumped on, held down then spend the rest of their miserable lives in prison or wait to die on death row.
