As students at the Florida school where 17 people were recently killed returned to classes, a major gun retailer has announced it will stop selling the kind of weapon used in the attack.
Dick's Sporting Goods, which has more than 600 shops, said it would no longer sell assault-style rifles, and backed "common sense gun reform".
The move came as pupils and teachers made an emotional return to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Grief counsellors were on hand.
In the aftermath of the 14 February shooting, pressure has mounted on US politicians to act on gun control and for corporations to cut ties with the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA).
Firms including Hertz car rental, United airlines and Delta airlines have ended discounts to NRA members.
Dick's Sporting Goods announcement also came as Florida lawmakers proposed a package of gun control measures, including a controversial bill to arm school staff, including teachers.
"We have tremendous respect and admiration for the students organising and making their voices heard regarding gun violence in schools and elsewhere in our country," Dick's Sporting Goods said in a statement. "We have heard you. The nation has heard you."
The retailer said it was committing itself to:
No longer selling assault-style rifles (The company had stopped selling such weapons after the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting but 35 shops run by a subsidiary had continued to do so.) Banning the sale of high-capacity magazines that allow more shots to be fired without reloading Not selling firearms to anyone under the age of 21
It said that while it supported the Second Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects the right to keep and bear arms, "gun violence is an epidemic that's taking the lives of too many people".

A dickless girly boy son of a crisis management FBI agent and prodegy of Podesta has caused all of this ................. with the vast help of knee padded enemies of America.
Well scratch DICKS off my shopping list.
Organizations and businesses taking actions that have no bearing or effect on what happened at the school...
Very smart, liberals...very smart...LOL
Didn’t they do that like 4 years ago? When did they start selling them again?
What Dick’s Sporting goods sells is their right privilege and prerogative. Conversely we have the prerogative of choosing who we do business with.
I remember them doing this after Sandy Hook. Thats when I stopped going to them.
They were having an AR-15 sale the weekend before Sandy Hook. I was there with a crowd of other guys looking (it was a really good sale), but I could not bring myself to buy something that ugly. I started to hand it back and the guy behind me asked to see it. I handed it to him and he slapped down his plastic without even looking at it. I checked in after their announcement and they did remove all AR-15 variants.
I did not know they had a subsidiary that continued to sell them. What was its name?
They will be returned and then shipped to other stores and will be sold in days if not weeks.
It looks like I’ve made my last purchase form Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Conversely we have the prerogative of choosing who we do business with.
I just cut my Dick’s credit card and mailed it back to them.
DICK’S? Yes, they certainly are!
They should change their name to Dickless Sporting Goods.
Dicks is where you go when you want to pay top dollar for workout clothes, golf clubs, golf balls, general sporting merchandise, not to buy guns. Hell, anyone that even goes to BassPro or Gander Mtn is nuts to spend their money there, but they do. Gander Mtn was about as expensive as it can get, maybe that’s the reason they’re gone.
But, the people that buy AR15s....ARE.....the people that go into Field & Stream stores. Wonder what’ll happen to them.
IF I were a customer at DICK’s I would pull my support.
Never went there anyway.
There is one nearby. Maybe I’ll fill a shopping cart and then decide not to buy anything. :-D
Dick’s who CH is aptly named did the same thing after Sandy Hook as did Cheaper Than Dirt. We don’t shop either place.
It's no M1A or Thompson M1928A1 but I wouldn't call it ugly.
Now, if you want to see a truly ugly firearm, check out the Shevchenko PSh-4 or the Korobov TKB-059.
The CEO and owners must be huge lefties.
They race to lib media to tout there ban
and then quietly put guns back on the shelves again months later .
Its pure left wing politics .
A number of years ago I got really good prices on several Ruger Single-Action revolvers at Gander Mountain. I also got a Ruger LCP from them on sale for less than $200.
However, it seemed like their prices went through the roof some time during the Obama mal-Administration.
