Walmart Inc said on Wednesday that it was raising the minimum age at which customers could buy firearms and ammunition to 21 years.

The U.S. retailer is also removing items from its website resembling assault-style rifles, including non-lethal airsoft guns and toys, it said in a statement.

“If we move to 21 for gun purchases, then it damn well better be 21 for voting, smoking, driving, legal responsibility and dependency for parents’ taxes.”

i agree - we would be taking rights away from people for 3 years yet still giving them the responsibility of adulthood.

Along with that - if only 21 year olds can be trusted with guns, then make 21 the minimum age for military service.

Anything else is illogical and hypocritical

This highlights the dangers of political correctness as it represents a version of Sharia type Law that usurps our legal system and regulations and takes rights away from all Americans without accountability.

"I'm in favor of raising everything up to age 21,...We Baby Boomers were bad enough. But Generation Z seems to be the worst, yet. If they want to be children and live in mom's basement until they are 30, treat them like children."

I see 18-year-old men coming back from initial training and disagree with you. I also see the potential for training in many after having been trained with many who were in that age range. The Second Amendment applies to everyone who is mentally and physically fit enough to be trained.

Besides, the politicians will continue to fish for ways to confiscate firearms from elderly people, too. They only need to get younger people on board by keeping firearms away from them to suit older folks with _____ envy.

Then let’s once again raise the voting age to 21. While we’re at it also raise the driving age to 21, with background checks and psych evals. We’re 100’s of thousands times more likely to be involved in a car wreck by some drunk or bimbo too preoccupied with texting her BFF about the crazy sex she had the night before than we are facing the business end of a gun, let alone being shot at. When we took the gun safety courses I realized if driving safety was taken half as seriously as gun safety is our insurance premiums would be like chump change.

They can also just stop selling them....and probably will.

Walmart has been removing guns from their stores for years.

When I moved to the Dallas area in 2005, every Walmart super-center had firearms. Now? I don't know of a single one in this area that does.

Young people are not ready to handle certain things.

My daughter moved out when she was 18, and has been completely on her own for two years.

I made sure she had her own pistol, and that she was proficient in its use before she left.

Are you telling me that she should not have a weapon to protect herself, because she's below an arbitrarily designated age?

"Kids have no business buying or owning guns. Period. Not today. Not ever. I hope this becomes law."

From a cultural perspective, "kids" have owned guns for a very long time, more often those that live on farms and ranches and elsewhere across the country. Heck, many city schools had shooting "clubs" and kids often went to school carrying their own gun.
Further back, many "kids" have fought in our war for independence and civil war.
It's only in the last few decades where we have these kids shooting up their schools. There are many contributing factors for that profound change: decrease of religion, decrease in the belief of "right vs wrong", increase in violence promoting movies, increase in violence promoting music, increase in violence promoting video games/phone apps and on and on.

From a legal point of view, 18, 19 or 20 year old's are considered adults...not kids.

I'm open to raising the age of consent, the age of adulthood to 21.

That means, not only can an 18-20 year not buy a gun (owning/firing, even stealing one is a different story), but they also can not vote, they can not be drafted into the armed forces, they can not enter into most legal contracts, etc.

The only way to make it lawful, is to raise the age of being an adult from 18 to 21, across the board. Otherwise, denying an 18-20 year old the right to purchase an otherwise legal firearm would be unlawful.

As a general rule yes, but I know of some 8-10 year olds whom I would trust to go out shooting with and conversely I know many adults who I wouldn’t even trust with a Red Ryder.

Can they do this under the law? If a state says you can buy this at age 18, can a business change it to any arbitrary age it feels like?

Absolutely. WallyWorld can't lower the age below 18, but it can raise the age as high as it wants or not sell the product at all. I suspect that the beancounters at WallyWord concluded that it has very few customers under the age of 21 who buy "assault rifles" and therefore, this is a neutral economic decision. I also suspect, however, that WallyWorld will lose customers across all age groups because of this issue, and in the end, it will lose money. I will never shop there again. But I never shopped at there to begin with because the store kind of sucks..

If young people are not ready to handle firearms, then why do we let them serve in the military?

If the age for purchasing a rifle is raised to 21 I suggest we also raise the minimum age for service in the armed forces to 21.

Kids have no business buying or owning guns. Period. Not today. Not ever.

My four kids all began shooting real guns between the ages of 8 and 10. They all became proficient shooters in time, and my two youngest are excellent marksmen.

My kids grew up with guns in their lives, and respect them immensely. I can tell you for a fact that none of them would ever pick up a gun in anger, and would only do so as a last resort to protect human life.

Dont lump all kids together. They're not all raised the same.

They are getting sued real bad for discrimination based on age very soon. They absolutely cannot do that and it is CLASS ACTION. I would sell your Walmart stock in the morning.!! they cannot treat protected classes differently like Sex , Age, Race, religion. They are in BIG trouble. Their lawyers will be on the phone tonight getting this straightened out with this very poor management decision. What a joke.

So I presume you think no 18 to 21 year old person should serve in the military or in a police force, or as a security guard as well? Or do you think a 19 year old kid should only be able to carry, shoot, and maybe die carry a gun somebody else owns?
