Spain said Friday it would extend by one year a law that makes it easier for descendants of Jews who were forced to flee five centuries ago during the Inquisition to get citizenship.
The law - which aims to correct the "historical mistake" of sending Jews into exile in 1492, forcing them to convert to Catholicism or burning them at the stake - came into effect in October 2015 and was set to expire in October 2018.
But government spokesman Inigo Mendez de Vigo said Spain's cabinet had agreed to extend the measure by one year until October 2019.
So far 6,432 Jews with Spanish ancestry, who are known as Sephardic Jews, have obtained Spanish citizenship without having to give up their other nationality, he told a news conference following a weekly cabinet meeting.
The Spanish government had estimated when the law was passed that roughly 90,000 people would apply for citizenship, although officials said there was no precise way of knowing how many descendants meet the criteria.
Applicants do not have to be practicing Jews but they must have their Jewish heritage vetted by the Spanish Federation of Jewish Communities, a private umbrella organisation for Jewish groups, or by rabbis where they live.

Dang it!
My very first thought and you wrote exactly what I was going to post.
Stay out of my head!!!
And now, back to our regular programming...
What’s funny is all those churches the were converted during the occupation to Mosques, then repurposed back to churches are now being taken over again in the new invasion.
Before you know it, they will have colored Cordoba, declared a holy Toledo, become the beacon of Cristo de la Luz and be seated once again at Alhambra...
1. Why is Spain wasting it’s time with this? It owes the Jews of today nothing and can’t right the wrongs of the past.
2. All they are doing is making it more possible for Muslims to insist that the same thing be done for them because their ancestors were banished in the 16th century.
Nice gesture but of very little value or importance in the larger scheme of things today. Cordoba and it appears the rest of Spain is in the process of being conquered again by the islamonazi invasion of Europe. Far better for Jewish people to return to Israel where at least they can defend themselves.something theyre just not organized to do in Europe, America, Canada, or anywhere else for that matter. Now is the window of opportunity
Any advantage to being a Spanish citizen? I might give this situation a shot just for the novelty of it. Shalom.
All the Shapiros, go buy some condos on Ibiza!
Seriously, there are some Catholic Mexicans who have been told by their mothers and their mothers to light candles on a Friday night and they dont know why. And other Jewish traditions.
I know someone who only had his last name to go by, and despite a totally Catholic Mexican upbringing, converted to Judaism, his quest initiated on the basis of a Sephardic last name.
Some of those churches used to be synagogues.
They are also giving validity to the claims of Arab “refugees” who want the right to return to Israel because their grandfather was there for two years, from 1946 to 1948, and accepted an invitation to leave until the combined Arab forces could finish wiping out the Joooos! Their connection to Israel is remote to non-existent, but they continue to claim a ‘right of return’. If enough Sephardim had been interested in returning to Spain, that would have bolstered their claim.
Interestingly, Fidel and Raul Castro are descendants of Maranos. If things get too hot for the surviving brother, he’s got one more year to beat feet back to Spain.
Yep and Catholic then mosque then Catholic and history rhymes
Rights of ancestry or quite different than presumed wrongs of a conquering people, who continue to insist Spain still belongs to them.
Oh man! Haven’t seen that I years.
The jackpot, the nuns and the Menorah are hilarious
And the friars have female legs.
advantage ?
1) Ability to work anywhere in Europe, ditto for your kids.
2) Free college for the kids/grandkids
3) Better than a doomstead and ditch bag WTSHTF
“forcing them to convert to Catholicism or burning them at the stake”
Yes. Or rather, no.
They were given the choice of converting or leaving. No man who could say, “I am a Jew, and everyone has always known it,” was ever burned.
Burned were Jews who faked conversion to stay in Spain but secretly remained practicing Jews.
whoa - come to think of it, I qualify on my Mothers side.
During WWII the Franco regime managed to save several thousand Jews from Hitler by permitting them to claim Sephardi heritage, and hence Spanish citizenship.
