Feel The Burn [Elon Musk disaster]
Eric Peters Autos | April3, 2018 | Eric Peters

Even long cons can only run for so long. Elon Musk’s electric car con may be on the verge – finally – of coming unglued. This week, he’ll be forced to reveal actual production numbers for the first quarter of the year which are expected to fall well short of what he promised investors – and buyers, who ponied up deposits based on those promises. Last year, Musk breezily assured both groups that an improbable 5,000 Model 3s – Tesla’s first “mass-produced” electric car – would be rolling off the production line in Fremont, CA each week. He’s come as close to reaching that goal as he has to sending space tourists to Mars, another promise. Thousands of people who were promised cars last year are still waiting for cars this year.

They may still be waiting next year, given that Musk – so far – has only been able to build a relative handful of Model 3s. The backlog is giga-normous. Which means that even if he somehow manages to ramp up the production to what he promised last year, it’ll take an increase in production over that promised number just to catch up this year. Meanwhile, the marks – whoops, buyers – wait. And wait, again. It’s scandalous.

You can get away with just about anything if you have the ideological bona fides.

Build quality and reliability for these cars are horrendous. It must cost Tesla a staggering amount to repair these cars while under warranty.

That's why I think in the end, big winner will be Volkswagen. Yes, the same Volkswagen at the center of the Dieselgate scandal.

Why? Because VW unveiled two years ago their electric car platform, Modularer Elektrobaukasten (MEB) or Modular Electrical Construction Kit. Designed to scale from very small cars up to the vehicles the size of the current Passat sedan, MEB could replace every non-luxury car VW model by 2023. So while Tesla fails, VW will be in the cutting edge of electric car development.

It’s up to Musk. He’s a great promoter and he’s worth $16 billion. If he wants to save Tesla he can put some of his own money up.

Go to Youtube and find the videos lamenting the cost of bodywork for Teslas damaged in fender benders. It’s downright comical.

VW Group’s Audi e-Tron and Porsche Mission E vehicles are or will soon be on the market as direct Tesla competitors.

He’s lucky people keep buying Tesla stock because they just keep issuing more to keep up with the burn rate. Eventually it’s going to crash. Do see how they are going to “fill the bubble”.

True. In fact, Porsche’s J1 platform used on the Mission E could become the basis for electric luxury vehicles from the VW Group.

And how much of our tax payer money has he sucked up to have his crappy car company continue?

If he spent his own money I wouldn’t care

Straight up hit piece.
Makes very clear that nobody expects an actual 5000 cars per week... then fails to state he’s producing about 2000 per week - instead making it sound like he’s making a dozen a month.
Article is nasty enough I have to wonder what benefit the author gets from Musk failing - and seems author is scared Musk will succeed.

Musk has too many irons in the fire.

He should concentrate on ONE thing at a time and let the others be managed by competent XO’s.

He may well wish he was on that car he launched into orbit if he doesn’t....................

Tesla has never made a profit on selling cars. Their business model is based on using tax breaks and the sale of carbon credits to offset losses from the sale of cars. The liberal media has been so worshipful of ‘green’ technology that they haven’t bothered to look at the actual numbers or do any actual investigating.
