Jefferson did not free his slaves, at least he didn’t free the bulk of them. Jefferson owned close to 700 slaves over his life time. He freed only 10 of them. Five were freed while he was alive and the other five were freed, per his will, after his death. The remaining slaves at Monticello and the other Jefferson estates were sold shortly after his death to pay off his debts.
Maybe they should not have been purchased as slaves and transported to colonies. I suspect the ones that sailed here in slave ships would have really preferred to stay in Africa.
