Mitt Romney did not win the Utah Republican Party's nomination on Saturday, meaning he must compete in a June primary election as he seeks to replace retiring US Sen. Orrin Hatch.
After a wild and raucous day of voting at the Utah GOP convention, the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee was unable to win the 60% that he needed to head to the November ballot unopposed. When none of the 12 candidates were able to cross that threshold, the party continued with successive rounds of caucus voting until one candidate reached 40%.
On the second round of voting, Utah state representative Mike Kennedy emerged in the lead with 50.88%. Romney came in a close second with 49.12%.
Romney and Kennedy will now compete in a primary set for June 26.
After the vote, Romney said he was looking forward to a primary race. "This is terrific for the people of Utah, and I really want to thank the delegates who stayed so late to give me the kind of boost that I got here today," Romney said, standing on the convention floor after the proceedings were adjourned. "We're going to have a good primary.

This will be the 2nd time Mitt gets beat by a Kennedy, and I hope it finally sticks a fork in his political aspirations.
I'd love to see Sarah Palin stump for Dr. Kennedy, oh a dish served cold...
what I do not get is how people actually voted for the carpet bagger. Seriously the man sees a position, and then moves to the state in order to run stating how he loves UT, and he cares about them. What the hell is wrong with people if they do not see what he really is doing?

Only happens if Joe comes to his senses and drops out which seems unlikely. Joe, for all of his qualities seems to have a bit of an inflated ego. He cannot win a statewide election and will guarantee a McSally win in the primary if he stays in.
If mittens is the nominee you are in for a big surprise.

if mitt wins, it would be better to vote for the democrat than let the most liberal backstabbing RINO in the party have the most conservative seat.
Mitt would cost 5 more senate seats just like he cost us Alabama’s by backing the enemy. We are seriously better off letting the democrats have the seat, than letting Mitt have it.
Well, he has another Kennedy running against him now...
