UC Berkeley: ‘Hard to defend’ free speech of conservatives who ‘incite’ liberal students
The Washington Times ^ | May 4, 2018 | Douglas Ernst -

A long-awaited report on free speech protections at the University of California, Berkeley, blames “hard to defend” conservative speakers for inciting left-wing students to violence.

A commission of Berkeley faculty, students formed in 2017 after violent and costly student protests called its commitment to free speech into question. Their months long study of the issue resulted in the conclusion that “ultra-conservative rhetoric” by the likes of Milo Yiannopoulos and Ann Coulter only exists to “advance a facile narrative that universities are not tolerant of conservative speech.”

“Contrary to a currently popular narrative, Berkeley remains a tolerant campus,” the report says, Politico reported Thursday. “Although those speakers had every right to speak and were entitled to protection, they did not need to be on campus to exercise the right of free speech. Indeed, at least some of the 2017 events at Berkeley can now be seen to be part of a coordinated campaign to organize appearances on American campuses likely to incite a violent reaction.”

What the real problem is, is the suppressing of freedom of belief in the classroom, and marks-rewarded progressive indoctrination rather than development of facts-based critical thinking. Hoist on their own petard, is the phrase to describe why their attack-dogs riot when a conservative speaker sets foot on campus.

Same is true, but on a minor key, in public schools staffed by their liberal "Social Studies" and "English-as-a-first-language" teachers and humanist Dewey-style administrators, to whom a parent observing their methods is anathema.

Of the people most reprehensible in America some of the worst are the leftist demonstrators who align with Antifa and BLM to restrict and chill free assembly and free speech by the right.

To say that the weaklings are so upset by possible harsh words that they deny others freedoms is so narcissistic as to be absurd.

Peaceful coexistence with these people is not possible. They hate us and they want us dead.

Prepare accordingly.

The most difficult freedom to grant is not to those who agree with us but freedom for the thought we haste-—Oliver Wendell Holmes (paraphrased)

Weaklings and worthless cowards like the leftist punks must be forced to allow others freedoms or we are finished.

So much for higher education weighing the alternatives of issues. It is the usual method, “Don’t bombard me with facts, I’ve already made up my mind”.

Its time to cut off all federal funding to the UC system including HUD assistance .
Its is not protecting free speech just leftist free speech .
We need to stop overlooking these attacks on free speech and counter attack .

Liberals blaming the victim.
“If they just shut up or publicly agreed with us, we wouldn’t have to threaten violence to shut them up!”

There is no First Amendment right to shout down a speaker. If a governmental actor, such a public university, sides with the heckler by canceling the event or refusing to protect the speaker against use of force, it has failed to uphold the speaker’s free speech rights.

In Forsyth County v. Nationalist Movement (1992), the Supreme Court held that the First Amendment protects “[t]hose wishing to express views unpopular with bottle throwers . . . Speech cannot be financially burdened, any more than it can be punished or banned, simply because it might
offend a hostile mob.”

So...if you don’t like what people say, punch and kick them...because it’s their fault.

and if that does not work, then kill them ... historic socialist recipe ...

Then why, in the 60’s and 70’s, wasn’t liberal speech banned at conservative colleges in California? The liberal mantra then was “free speech anywhere on campus” to allow them to bring their antiwar and socialist opinions on campus, despite the fact that they knew it was going to “incite” conservative students...

Lol, I thought Berkeley was supposed to have highly intelligent faculty and students, and that's the best they can come up with to blame their bigotry and intolerance on others? After months of study, no less.

Yep, the only reason conservatives form any beliefs about political and social issues is to make leftists nitwits at places like Berkeley seem intolerant.

When leftist students get violent, it is because they are undisciplined spoiled brats, not because conservatives talk.

The liberal ones who got violent are the victims.

The conseravative ones who just talked are the villains.

Hope that clarifies.

Oliver Wendell Holmes never understood that government doesn’t “grant” freedom which is an unalienable right “endowed” to us by our Creator, not by man or his government.

All government tyranny can do is violate that right by presuming power We through the Constitution have not granted to government.

The answer is reinstating the Constitution as the Supreme Law of the Land against the 80% unconstitutional feds, stuffing the feds back into their constitutional cage by dismantling that 80%, and restoring our Free Constitutional Republic.

That seems like the very definition of intolerance. But this is the sophistry that emanates from our liberal universities.

I’ll bet these duplicitous shills would learn “definitions” trump “narratives” if their federal funding got pulled.

It’s time for America to punish these “intellectuals” (Bork definition).

I believe everyone should spend a few hours in a lifetime wandering along Telegraph Ave. at the foot of Sather Gate at the U. of California. One notes that it seems that one of every two students trudging toward campus is an oriental with backpack so loaded he or she could pass for a sherpa. Compared to them the whites, blacks and browns carry a light load. Then check local resources for names of participants in the usual Berkeley protests. You’ll immediately note the lack of oriental names. One is left to assume the orientals are there for an education while the protestors are carrying on their parents’ tradition. P.S. Local wags claim that Stanford is just as radical as Berkeley, but its students are twice as smart.
