John McCain is supposedly trying to hang on till past May 31st, after which he will either die or resign.
The reason: so the PEOPLE don't get to choose his successor!
If he dies or resigns before May 31st, there will have to be an election to fill out his term (he was just reelected in 2016).
If he dies or resigns after that, then the governor can appoint somebody until the 2020 election.
And McCain has already supposedly given the governor a list of people to succeed him, one of which would be his wife, Cindy. And wouldn't that be special!
The Senate seat is HIS, ya see!
John McCain. Odious to the end, and if he has his way, even AFTER the end!
Lol! The man has insulted almost every conservative dozens of times in the last two years and you want us to be nice. Get bent!
Doug Doucy was elected in 2014 for a 4 year term.
I think he has been fairly conservative though I am not from there. I’m not sure if he can or would appoint himself as senator? Anybody know?
Putz ‘til the end...
Is there ANY proof he is alive? Really.
The attacks began with McCain and his stooges trying to destroy the Tea Party movement back in 2009.
Many of us backed him in his run for the Presidency and all we got was stabbed in the back and lies.
McCain has gotten off easy for someone who should have been fired over Keating 5 at least.
Is everything about McCrisis a joke?
I agree wholeheartedly.
As Blago said I can't be giving a Senate seat away for nothing.
Correction - JAILED!
She did and then she sold it, so she's out.
I suppose she could just declare that she now self identifies as an Arizonan.
I take it that you approve of the 17th AmendmentThe Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures.and prefer that system to the Framers design which the Framers clearly intended never to see amended:When vacancies happen in the representation of any State in the Senate, the executive authority of such State shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies: Provided, That the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct.
The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, chosen by the Legislature thereof . . .The constitutional design, that is, provides that each State government is to be represented by two senators, and that provision was not made subject to normal amendment by 3/4 of the states but by unanimous consent of the states.. . . no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article; and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate.
The slimy 18th Amendment did not change the number of senators from any state but made the senators from each state representative not of the government of that state but of the people of that state. It is no accident, comrade, that SCOTUS only began overturning state laws in a big way when the state governments no longer controlled the Senate.
Nope, state law states the replacement must be of the party that he was elected in. I suspect that they didn't address the issue of a democrat changing to republican to qualify.
Said Bobby, Ted and Hillary.
Must be a Republican though whether John changes or not. Doesn't say how long a replacement must be a Republican tho so could be a Democrat poser, I guess.
I would rather have it the old way pre 17th amendment. I just don’t want a governor to have the sole power to name a senator.
Not so fast. If McCain changes parties before he dies, the Governor must appoint a member of the same party as the deceased.
If he’s staying in the Senate because he doesn’t want to give the Democrats a shot at winning the seat isn’t that better than if he’s just staying in out of egotism, spite, and perversity?
Perhaps the voters of Arizona should have thought of that in 2016 before they re-elected a walking octogenarian cancer ward who had already served for almost 30 years in the Senate.
My thoughts too.
When I saw “John McCain Wants “... I thought or the McCain family wants that anyway.
Legal voters have long been been a thorn in his side.
