Rep Congressman Dana Rohrabacher says it’s OK not to sell homes to gays; loses support of Realtors

U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher told a group of Realtors last week that homeowners should be able to refuse to sell their property to gays and lesbians, a statement that cost him the support of a key national Realtor group.

“Every homeowner should be able to make a decision not to sell their home to someone (if) they don’t agree with their lifestyle,” Rohrabacher told an Orange County Association of Realtors delegation at a May 16 meeting in Washington, D.C., according to Wayne Woodyard, a former Orange County Realtor president who was at the event.

On Thursday, Rohrabacher confirmed the accuracy of the sentiment, and added that homeowners should have the right to “choose who they do business with.”

“We’ve drawn a line on racism, but I don’t think we should extend that line,” Rohrabacher said.

“A homeowner should not be required to be in business with someone they think is doing something that is immoral.”

The statement ignited a protest by a Realtor gay-rights group, prompting the National Association of Realtors to withdraw its recommendation that members send campaign contributions to Rohrabacher.

“It was determined that Rep. Rohrabacher will no longer receive support from NAR’s President’s Circle,” an association statement said, referring to its list of recommended candidates. Rohrabacher’s stance, the 1.3-million-member trade group said, is contrary to NAR’s code of ethics, which bans discrimination on the basis of “sexual orientation or gender identity.”

“We certainly hope that Congress will … support the elimination of housing discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.”

The about-face occurred as the 15-term coastal Orange County Republican is locked in his toughest re-election campaign.

He’s facing 15 challengers, including eight Democrats as well as onetime political ally Scott Baugh, former Orange County GOP chairman.

Why do republicans do this.

Perhaps because a few of them are actually worried about the perversion of our culture and not just about getting votes and making money.

The principle of private ownership doesn't represent your values? I suspect that's not what you meant and perhaps haven't thought this through, but that's exactly where this type of thinking leads.

A person has the freedom, for ANY REASON WHATSOEVER - good, bad, right, wrong - to choose how to dispose of HIS property. It's not yours, it's not the realtors', it's not the government's. Whatever reason goes through his mind whether racist, fascist, communist, Islamic, homophobic, Christophobic, conservo-phobic, that's up to him. It's his property.

Why does he care?

It’s none of anyone’s business and he did this to himself.

No, the federal fair housing act prohibits discrimination based on
Race or color
National origin
Religion
Disability or handicap, including physical and mental impairment
Sex, including sexual harassment
Familial status (includes protection for people with children under age 18 or pregnant women)

This is just stupid. Do gay people have to disclose that they are gay when purchasing a home? I have made it a practice to never assume.

Like why the hell would a person care?

As long as their check clears, I couldn’t care less who buy the house. I’m not going to live there anymore.

Because selling a house has jack to do with that?

Some people on our side just LIVE to being barking idiots.

it is not association. When you sell your house I assume you are moving. No one is making you associate with anyone.

Personally I am at the point of thinking that no one should be required to provide services to anyone they choose not to work with.

No one.

No special classes or cases.

No one.

you can take int off the market. What you can’t do is oidscrimenate against protected classes. Realtors didn’t pass the laws, they are charged with following them.

You are pathetically wrong in your argument and The Fair Housing Act (Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968) proves you are wrong................

My advice to you is, don't represent yourself in court, get an attorney who knows the law............

Who I sell my house to or not is my business as until I sell it it’s still MY house.

What would Hot Tabasco say if the homeowner refused to sell to Islamic terrorists? Convicted rapists? Drug infested brothels?

Would you be of the same opinion as in post& 17?

Why or why not?

Yes it’s still your house till the escrow closes or the contract period expires. But you can’t discriminate.

Here’s something you may understand. IT’S THE LAW. You can be sued and so can the realtors if they participate in discrimination and don’t tell you the law and have you sign a form to that effect. Also, the realtor will lose their license and be subject to the suit.
