More Say 'Nature' Than 'Nurture' Explains Sexual Orientation
Gallup ^ | May 24nd 2018 | Lydia Saad

Posted on 05/31/2018 2:38:55 PM PDT by Ennis85

Half of Americans in Gallup's 2018 Values and Beliefs poll say that being gay or lesbian is a trait from birth, easily eclipsing the 30% who believe it is a product of upbringing and environment. This is consistent with findings over the past few years. Another 10% say both explanations play a role, while 4% attribute being gay to something else and 6% are unsure.

When Gallup first asked this "nature vs. nurture" question in 1977, a majority of U.S. adults (56%) said being gay or lesbian was due to people's upbringing and environment, and only 13% saw it as a birth trait. Attitudes didn't shift markedly until after 1989. Between 1989 and Gallup's next update in 1996, the percentage believing sexual orientation is determined at birth jumped from 19% to 31%, and reached 40% by 2001. Opinion remained steady for the next 12 years, as Americans were roughly split between the two positions. Since 2012, the percentage assigning sexual orientation to nature rather than nurture has inched up another 10 percentage points.

This year's Values and Beliefs poll, conducted May 1-10, also shows 67% of Americans in favor of same-sex marriages being legal -- a new high for that viewpoint. Separately, Gallup recently reported that the percentage of Americans identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender has increased a full point since 2012 and is now 4.5%.

The perception that a person is born gay rather than it being the result of upbringing or other factors has increased among all demographic and political groups. But, according to a comparison of aggregated data from 2001 to 2003 vs. 2015 to 2018, the change in beliefs has been most pronounced among politically left-leaning groups, including young adults (aged 18 to 34), college graduates, Democrats, liberals and those who seldom or never

Most homosexuals were sexually molested as children.

They seek to normalize their behavior to achieve easier access to MOLEST YOUR CHILDREN!

On page 37, the other relevant result relates to men.

The 13th research question addressed, of homosexual men who have been molested, what percentage were molested before self-identification as homosexual men, and what percentage were molested after self-identification as homosexual? Of homosexual men who were molested, 68% were molested before self-identification as homosexual, and 32% were molested after self-identification as homosexual.

I have links to dozens of related studies.

It’s almost impossible to conduct such studies today because they’re “not allowed” for fear of their conclusions.

Note: Surveys are NOT a substitute for studies.

Traumatic childhood events are often suppressed.

Try finding trained professionals to conduct the interviews who don’t have a gay sympathy bias.

Sorry, don’t know too many children who affect a gay lisp and like putting stuff up their rear end.

Men and women have a soul, and our souls are exactly identical. You take on the sexuality of the body in which you are born, assuming you are a reasonable person who plays the hand you are dealt.

All the rest is just hitting your head against the wall.

Just a telephonic poll, no science.

Even gay scientists Simon LeVay says he no longer thinks they'll ever find a gay gene or any science to support the idea anybody is born with an attraction to the same sex. And scientists say this because studies show us time and time again that environment plays the largest part in determining our sexuality.

I lean towards ‘born that way”

my reason?

Nobody would willingly ‘choose’ a lifestyle that gets nothing but disgust from the majority of all sexes. High school is hell for these people.

Just my 2 cents...

Harboring a sexual proclivity that produces no offspring makes it pretty much impossible to pass on those “gay genes.” Also, identical twins, who by definition have identical genetics, exhibit no statistically significant joint tendency toward homosexuality. They are often (almost always) both heterosexual, but sometimes one tends toward homosexuality and the other not, and rarely both lean toward homosexuality.

I’d say that’s case closed on the “born that way” nonsense.

This is a full diaper load. Since gay marriage and the Obama era full court press of publicity around “alternative lifestyles” this kind of behavior has skyrocketed. This would lead one to believe the environment (social and political) is a major influence, hence “nurture”.

”Nobody would willingly ‘choose’ a lifestyle that gets nothing but disgust from the majority of all sexes. High school is hell for these people.”

Are you kidding? These days, homosexuality is lauded as a high virtue, and those practicing it are treated as social heroes. Consequently, more and more kids are “identifying” as “gay.” They see it as a badge of honor. The fact that making homosexuality more socially acceptable has led to much higher numbers of people claiming to be homosexual is further proof that no one is just born this way.

Most homosexuals were sexually molested as children.

I have read about some studies that make just such a point. I also read an executive summary of a study that stated children who had overbearing mothers and weak fathers had a higher incidence of homosexuality. I had two cousins from that type of family and they both became homosexuals.

They were fine as children but became strange as they matured while their mother smothered them and refused to let them date girls or even play sports.

I'm a old fart. Back in my day, a queer risked getting the crap beat outta him. At the very least he faced a barrage of queer jokes. Had about three "outed' fags in high school. And a few more suspected. Their lives were not pleasant. Add in the stress of just being a teenager and I cannot envision any way of me 'choosing' to be a homo. No friggin way.

No doubt today, anything goes...

50% are below the mean. The average could be something else, depending on the distribution.

Nonsense, indeed. Many years ago I put the following together. Most of the links are no longer valid but some are:

I've forgotten more about the subject than those in the telephonic poll will ever know. Just nonsense.

If you understand how these polls work, it’s mostly BS. What they’re not cherry picking, or wording in a way to get the answers they want.. they’re outright making things up. A lot of polls like this are polling mostly democrats and independents.

Thank you for referencing that article Ennis85. Please note that the following critique is directed at the polls in general and not at you.

As a side note about the integrity of polls, please consider the following.

Consider that if liberal pollsters interpret poll results the same way that they interpret the “living” Constitution, patriots need to start demanding transparency for all aspects of a given poll.

For example, consider the following rigged pro-Obama reelection poll.

Robopoll records silence as support for Obama.
