31 May: Townhall: FLASHBACK: Obama Pardoned Terrorist FALN Leader Oscar Lopez Rivera
by Chris Reeves
As President Trump considers or moves forward with pardons for Dinesh D’Souza, Martha Stewart, and former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, it’s worth taking a step back to review one of the most controversial presidential pardons in recent history — Barack Obama’s January 2017 commutation of the 55-year sentence of Puerto Rican terrorist Oscar Lopez Rivera, one of the principal leaders of the Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional (FALN).

During the group’s heyday from 1974 to 1983, the FALN was responsible for more than 130 bombings across the United States, the deadliest of which was the 1975 Fraunces Tavern bombing in Manhattan that killed four people and wounded 63 more. In the following years, FALN members threatened to blow up U.S. nuclear facilities, kidnapped Democratic and Republican presidential campaign workers at gunpoint during the 1980 race, and even planned to kidnap President Reagan’s son Ron in 1981. The FALN’s stated purpose for all this mayhem and terror was to create a Marxist and independent government in Puerto Rico similar to that of the communist Castro regime in Cuba.

While the above activities were taking place, Lopez was at the top of the FALN’s chain of command and played a primary role in training new terrorist members to construct homemade explosive devices and conduct bombing attacks...

Even with his astonishing record of murder and treason, Lopez attracted a great deal of support from the mainstream American Left and the Democratic Party when Obama commuted the FALN leader’s sentence. According to Politico [emphasis mine]:...ETC

Dinesh was prosecuted for exercising his First Amendment rights. If Trump was wrong to pardon him, two wrongs made a right.

He said on the Laura Ingraham show that the worst part of his politically motivated punishment was the requirement to perform one day of community service every week for five years. A form of slavery.

Did Marc Rich ever pay anything to the government? He was a fugitive when Clinton pardoned him, living in Switzerland. His ex-wife Denise Rich donated $400,000 to the Clinton Library in exchange for the pardon.

Actually, it was investigated by Comey, who pronounced it "troubling but ultimately not illegal"...

You'll find Comey has a history of cleaning up after the Clintons going back decades. He usually finds whatever it was they did, "troubling" but otherwise, fine.

I think they should go back through Comey’s history, and Fitzgerald’s, and Mueller’s, with a fine toothed comb. They should probably be pardoning just about everyone they ever railroaded.

Mark Levin praised the pardon tonight, saying no one else would’ve had the guts to pardon D’Souza.

This was how Obama was elected and Clinton was to waltz right into the Oval Office by her “bundled” money. The liberals are nefarious, hypocritical a-holes.

It’s an obvious shot across the bow for any Mule-Ears process crime future indictment. Basically says “My Constitutional pardoning power ‘TRUMPS’ your prosecutorial power”

Gosh, what an appropriately named President!!

The left is upset? It’s not like he pardoned a bunch of drug addicts and dealers.

I have no doubt that Obama’s minions, perhaps on his orders, used NSA or other intelligence to find out about D’nesh’s transgressions. They then laundered the info through some regular type of investigation, they just happened to know where to look. They did the same thing to lots of people.

“The left is upset? It’s not like he pardoned a bunch of drug addicts and dealers.”

Obama pardoned hundreds of drug dealers and convicted murderers.

Sorry folks, but this one, and the toying with pardoning Martha and Blogovich stink to high heaven to me.... Makes me wonder what he’s doing that he wants folks distracted from.

D’Souza broke the law... he flagrantly violated it... and frankly got off with a very light sentence for his crimes. This pardon makes no sense, other than as a distraction.

The “selective prosecution” argument is BS. I am not going to the mat for this guy over this... Seems like just an transparent ploy to distract. Had no problem with the Scooter pardon... this one and the ones being toyed with?

Sorry, nope, not going along for this ride Mr Trump... comes across as a transparent distraction to me.

D’Souza didn’t violate some obscure law out of ignorance, he knowingly broke campaign finance laws... He set up friends to be straw men to donate money to a campaign for him... This isn’t some oh, well, they broke some law and didn’t know it.

This pardon stinks to high heaven.. comes across to me as a transparent distraction... makes me really wonder what happened today Trump wanted to keep folks from noticing.

Yes. He is obviously distracting us away from the 3 percent GDP Growth, cutting of regulations and lessening of taxation.

Yep.

Sorry folks, this one is a stinker... I have no doubt folks will bite and defend it at all cost, just like some dems will defend Obama no matter what he did... but these don’t pass the smell test.

D’Souza is no victim, he broke the law, knowingly and wantonly, and honestly got off damned light for his crimes..

This one stinks of pointless pandering to control a news cycle...

Article II, Section 2, Clause 1 of the Constitution says: “The President … shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.” The president’s power can only be used to pardon someone for a federal crime, not a state one.

What rule was broken?
