You can lead liberals to books, but you can’t make them think.

Exactly. I don't know why any Freeper would object to this ruling.

How can anyone recognize a fundamental right to something that many people aren't capable of achieving?

Prospective Michigan teachers won’t have to take the SAT anymore to be certified in Michigan, a move that might help attract more teachers to the profession and help districts struggling with classroom vacancies.......

“Teachers do not have to teach you”

Well, no, they don’t.

Education is not something that is done TO you, like a shot of penicillin. Someone who goes to any American school, even in Detroit, and who emerges illiterate is ineducable.

Blame in on the MEA, NEA, and “I could care less about my spawn” Parent. No Fathers around, just jizz donors.

"How about you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink it."

Yes, there is something to that. Speaking as a parent, kids love predictable and enjoyable routines. After they pick up their rooms and have their baths, let them pick out some books to read and read to your children every night. No matter how tired you may be, read to them. Both my kids had dozens and dozens of books, picked up on the cheap at garage sales for 5-10 cents. Little Golden Books. They love it to bits and the first thing they would do before a road trip was stuff their little "book bags" to take along. I'm driving down the road and both of them in the backseat in their car seats are chattering away as they read out loud to themselves or anyone listening.

It is always the parents responsibility to guide the children along the proper path of life. Barring some physical or learning disability, if a child can not read it is on YOU the PARENT, not the school.

Back when I was in school, in the dark ages, there was always a kid in the class who never learned anything. They were either too unintelligent to grasp what the rest of us caught on the first go-around, or, they were raised in a culture that celebrated ignorance. In any case, school was wasted on them and their presence there only slowed the learning of the children around them. Originally, the unenlightened school system separated them out into special classes with fewer students so they could get individual attention. Then, enlightenment dawned and they were all “mainstreamed” so they wouldn’t feel bad. Then, the got promoted in what was termed, “social promotions.” They graduated with the same level of ignorance with which they’d started but now they had the all important diploma, thus devaluing that achievement for all those who had earned it.

The teachers at least have to try and teach you. This is not a case of leading a horse to water, this is a case of not even leading the horse.

that teachers do not have to teach you, even though we pay them to do those very jobs

Did the other kids in class learn to read? If so, I wouldn’t accuse the teacher of not doing their job.

Teachers can teach all day long but if some students refuse to learn, how can you blame the teacher?

Public education is a wealth re-distribution scheme to grow the Deep State (there are no bigger players than the teachers’ unions), and the Founding Fathers never mentioned “literacy” or “education” as a right.

lowering Michigan voting age to 16.

Ballots will have to have emojis and little cartoons of candidates. Who can read?

I am writing this in Michigan. The bus stops have a silhouette of a person stepping into an open bus. They long ago took out the words “bus stop.” Only elitists who could read could tell what they said.

New pictures on ballot will show evil GOP scowling and happy, cheerful Dem-Socialist holding out money to the voter.

“The message that it sends is that education is not important.

Actually the message that this ruling sends is that it is you that are responsible for your own literacy not the Government

I don’t remember the right to literacy spelled out in the constitution.

Schools became mandatory after child labor laws were instituted back at the turn of the LAST century. But it is not a RIGHT.

Correct rulings both times. You do have a right to health care, a retirement check, a house, a job, or food either.

I’ll take Poor Assumptions for $200 Alex.
The “message” is that literacy is not a right.

no education or literacy as a right from Founding Fathers.

The educated populace they dreamed of in order to make voting worthwhile is a faded dream.

Dems are pretty clear on this: people have a right to an abortion, free money from taxpayers, free speech to slander and threaten President Trump, freedom to send Antifa to gas and brutalize people gathering for a political expression rally that seems conservative, and freedom to choose a taxpayer paid sex change and counseling. That’s about it.

Providing for education is long way from saying literacy is required. No one can be required to be literate and not all people are capable of it. The state cannot make a child literate. That’s up to the child and the parents.

The root of the word education is “educe”, meaning “to bring out”. Can’t bring out what isn’t there.

No, police do not have to protect you. That’s what the Second Amendment is for. While it would be nice to have a cop in situ 24/7 in my house, the cost would be formidable.

There is not right to literacy, either. Rights do not require another person to lift a finger. That would be a form of slavery. If the kid can’t be bothered to learn, it’s his problem.
