Effect of cannabis use in people with chronic non-cancer pain prescribed opioids
The Lancet Medical Journal ^ | July 2018 | Gabrielle Campbell, PhD and 14 other PHDS

Posted on 07/04/2018 10:55:03 AM PDT by DouglasKC

Summary

Background

Interest in the use of cannabis and cannabinoids to treat chronic non-cancer pain is increasing, because of their potential to reduce opioid dose requirements. We aimed to investigate cannabis use in people living with chronic non-cancer pain who had been prescribed opioids, including their reasons for use and perceived effectiveness of cannabis; associations between amount of cannabis use and pain, mental health, and opioid use; the effect of cannabis use on pain severity and interference over time; and potential opioid-sparing effects of cannabis.

-SNIP-

Interpretation

Cannabis use was common in people with chronic non-cancer pain who had been prescribed opioids, but we found no evidence that cannabis use improved patient outcomes. People who used cannabis had greater pain and lower self-efficacy in managing pain, and there was no evidence that cannabis use reduced pain severity or interference or exerted an opioid-sparing effect. As cannabis use for medicinal purposes increases globally, it is important that large well designed clinical trials, which include people with complex comorbidities, are conducted to determine the efficacy of cannabis for chronic non-cancer pain.

Growing indoors is, by all accounts, quite time consuming and expensive

And it requires a lot of energy. Isn't it interesting that Globull Warmers don't say a word about the pot growers destroying the world.

‘So the propaganda lie that increased marijuana usage through legalization will decrease opiod use is just that...a massive lie.’

so is your recommendation going forward a continuation of mass incarceration of those that partake of marijuana...

Since it SEEMS that those who smoke pot to relieve "pain" get more sensitive to pain and their pain gets worse then it stands to reason that they would then move on to opiods. Pot use leads to opiod use. If I were in charge i would make possession of pot VERY expensive if caught. Sort of like drunk driving...huge fines that will discourage people financially. If they can't pay the fine 30 days in the county jail.

I guess the patients that tell me face to face they’re lives have improved greatly since they stopped using opioids & use cannabis instead are just all liars then. /s Everyone who disagrees with authoritarian prohibitionists are certainly liars as well I suppose. SMH. Shame there wasn’t 100 PHD’s in this ‘study’. Then it would REALLY have been super duper extra valid lol!

Unfortunately your OPINION flies in the face of science.

Sorry, but I personally know 3 people that used Arizona’s medical marijuana laws to get off opiods, they were on a pain management program via opiods and wanted off it because it was destroying their lives... they now cope with their cronic non cancer pain with a natural plant God put on this earth for us to use.

Sorry, anecdotal stories are not science....

because Opioids!

I hope every one of these legislators contract a disease that causes chronic pain for the rest of their miserable lives. Damned drug warriors are freaking sadists. If you withheld pain medications from Prisoners of War, you’d be in violation of the Geneva Conventions, but witholding the same medication from veterans is just good policy according to all the idiots in office.

There is no opioid crisis. There is a Fentanyl crisis. None of it has anything to do with prescription opioids, but that’s never stopped a good campaign issue. None of these measures address the illicit drug that is killing tens of thousands. Go after China, Mexico and the gangs who are cutting drugs with the equivalent of cyanide. Leave the poor suffering people their efficacious medicines.

"Pot use leads to opiod use."

Legalized states are doing better overall than prohibition states. OR, for example, was one of just 3 states that actually saw a decline in OD deaths from 2010 - 2016. From the CDC =>

“Unfortunately your OPINION flies in the face of science.”

Fallacy (as usual lol) my experience flies in the face of that BS article you posted.

I’ve talked to real live human beings experience pain relief from cannabis & are thankful to be free of opioids.

No matter how you spin it, DouglasKC, authoritarian prohibitionist:cannabis is medicine for millions of people. Nothing you ever do or say in your entire life will ever change that fact.

To the Keyword spammer who wrote “homosexualagenda”: President Trump has done more to facilitate marijuana in America than all of FR combined, and arguably any president before him, including the last one.¹ ²

Is President Trump is facilitating the homosexual agenda? Step out from behind the keyboard and give us your thoughts.

Yeah how did mankind survive with it legal the first 2000 years... we have done so much better as a society with it illegal for the past 80 years right? Cancer rates have skyrocketed over the same period... how is that for a study? Like i keep saying fine by me to keep it illegal, just treat tobacco and alcohol the same way.

the way I have clinically seen cannabis be successful in pain relief is when it provided muscle relaxation to people with crippling back pain. In that respect it was much more effective than non-benzos, and a good choice for people with history of ETOh abuse or addiction.

The majority of users are legitimate. Why screw them over?

That law is reckless, draconian and incredibly stupid and cruel.

Let the doctors prescribe what they think is best, not the government and the drug warriors.

I quit tokin because I was always trying to keep my weight down. Grass will get rid of a headache in 5 minutes. Somebody once asked me if it kills severe pain. I said no it does not kill the pain you just don't give a chit anymore. 😊

Because civilized western culture understood and realized that it was detrimental to family, God and country and it's use was discouraged. It didn't have to be illegal because it was understood that only the basest of the base would ever use it....if they could get it. Uncivilized tribes, non-Christian mystery religions and pagan cults were the main users. Gee...just like today!

“Too bad, as I’ve heard it does great things for cancer patients.”

It’s not a “one size fits all” situation. Sometimes you trade one bad thing for another.

“Legalization will eliminate all the illegal drug dealers we have today.”

Hell, the illegal trade is actually increasing because more people are smoking it and don’t want to pay high prices.
