Slavery: What They Didn't Teach in My High School
townhall.com ^ | 7/12/2018 | Larry Elder

A man I have known since grade school changed his name, years ago, to an Arabic one. He told me he rejected Christianity as "the white man's religion that justified slavery." He argued Africans taken out of that continent were owed reparations. "From whom?" I asked.

Arab slavers took more Africans out of Africa and transported them to the Middle East and to South America than European slavers took out of Africa and brought to North America. Arab slavers began taking slaves out of Africa beginning in the ninth century -- centuries before the European slave trade -- and continued well after.

In "Prisons & Slavery," John Dewar Gleissner writes: "The Arabs' treatment of black Africans can aptly be termed an African Holocaust. Arabs killed more Africans in transit, especially when crossing the Sahara Desert, than Europeans and Americans, and over more centuries, both before and after the years of the Atlantic slave trade. Arab Muslims began extracting millions of black African slaves centuries before Christian nations did. Arab slave traders removed slaves from Africa for about 13 centuries, compared to three centuries of the Atlantic slave trade. African slaves transported by Arabs across the Sahara Desert died more often than slaves making the Middle Passage to the New World by ship. Slaves invariably died within five years if they worked in the Ottoman Empire's Sahara salt mines."

To be blunt, we are not in arrears to slaves or to freedmen. A subsequent generation deciding ex post facto that they are owed moolah doesn’t make the rest of us or even some of us in debt to them.

This is besides the earlier mentioned fact that those slaves and freedmen in the US are all long dead.

People do not inherit suffering or guilt as if these were commodities. Trying to make like an “inheritance” an entity in its own right that transmits the obligation is just a back door to working corruptions of blood.

Additionally, where are you suggest to transport them? Where are they to be housed and fed? While we’re at it which they is them?

"These reparations clowns need to be told to shove off in no uncertain terms."

I've got their "reparations." Right frikken here. Chambered in .40 Cal, 9mm and .357 Magnum. Oh, and an 8-shot 12-Guage Mossberg.

Come and get it!

"I seem to recall an article or post a while back counting the numbers that came to the states and the numbers that went to central and south America and the Caribbean islands."

You are correct.

South America got the vast majority of slaves.

Many multiples of what the (now) US did.

And don't forget, it wasn't the "USA" for centuries.

It was Spanish, British and French colonies bringing the slaves in.

The tribes enslaved one another too.

Nobody wants to talk about the fact that when one group battled another group, and somebody won. That group then enslaved the losers. You were garrisoned. You were assigned a tribute.

That’s how it worked, unless you tried picking a fight with the Romans. There are no more Lombards, Carthaginians, or Picts. Rome killed every last one, and in Carthage’s case, sowed their fields with salt to ensure another people couldn’t rise up from the area to threaten Rome.

It was mass genocide, or slavery, but it was universal.

TODAY, slavery is just a business, and its booming.

Thomas Sowell said it best: Africans (and all other slaves) were made slaves not because of their skin color, but because they were available.

"I’ve heard of Indians who were slaveowners but never as slaves."

Most of the inter-tribal warfare (that was a constant until the Indian wars ceased) was over hunting rights and slave gathering. Even Whites and Blacks were taken as slaves.

I didn’t find out until three years ago our Native Americans were often targeted by Europeans for the slave trade.

Some do not realize, that many American Indian tribes held slaves of members of other tribes, as well.

And guess who helped Squanto gain freedom from the slavers?

Christian monks!

The sad thing was his whole village perished to disease brought over from Europe.

It was in Plymouth Harbor, Massachusetts. When the Pilgrims got there, the fields were there—a little overgrown, but no trees—the remains of wigwams somewhat stood, and all the inhabitants gone. The few survivors had gone to live with other tribes.

Had Squanto not been captured, he may well have died in the epidemic.

Excellent article by Mr. Elder, and those stats re Brazil and Arab peoples were new to me even after years of research.

Real slavery exists today and much of it is perpetrated by Muslims. There is some real slavery even here in the US by Chinese (or Chinese Americans) in west coast prostitution rings. There is Mexican or Central American real slavery also here again with female sex slavery.

And there is Slavery Lite all over here with illegals working in sweatshops and fields without benefit of safety or legal rights or protections, often made to stay permanently in debt while working long unsafe hours.

And ironically the Muslim inroad to Americans was through prisoners.

Just saying that Obama’s Arab / African ancestors can not only claim him I’m okay if they take all the Commies on his mom’s side as well.

That way we anticommunists of Irish descent can wash our hands of them too.

Our neighbors went to a briefing the other day about human trafficking where we are. Disgusting. We watched a movie about a female US cop that went to work for the “un” combating international trafficking only to find (surprise!) they were knee deep in bribes and kickbacks and complicit in the foul deeds. Pigs need to be shot.

Harvard's Department of African and African American Studies professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. -- who also happens to be black -- wrote: "Between 1525 and 1866, in the entire history of the slave trade to the New World, according to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database, 12.5 million Africans were shipped to the New World. 10.7 million survived the dreaded Middle Passage, disembarking in North America, the Caribbean and South America. And how many of these 10.7 million Africans were shipped directly to North America? Only about 388,000. That's right: a tiny percentage. In fact, the overwhelming percentage of the African slaves were shipped directly to the Caribbean and South America; Brazil received 4.86 million Africans alone!"

Good stats to show to your kids. They will only hear how the USA is so horrible. Leftists want to tear down (deconstruct) America, so that the kids won't be proud of it and so they then won't be willing to defend its traditional values and institutions.

Thanks. I knew someone had it. And if I remember right, Gates isn't necessarily a friend. Correct as needed. 👍🏼🍿🍻

I’ve heard of Indians who were slaveowners but never as slaves.

Tribes would make the tribes into slaves after a battle or just on a raid. They enslaved anyone they wanted to.

One thing that made the Five Civilized Tribes civilized was the fact that they owned slaves. The Cherokee I know for a fact, held black slaves because when emancipation was ordered they offered freedom or tribal citizenship many chose the tribe. I think the tribe recently tried to remove the black Cherokees but were thwarted in their effort.

“I’m 100% for this. Absolutely. Reparations”

Why? Name one person alive today that was hurt by slavery.
