Yellowstone Volcano latest: 100-FOOT fissure sparks URGENT park closure

A 100-foot fissure has opened up in the Grand Teton National Park – not far from the potentially catastrophic Yellowstone volcano.

The giant crack in the Wyoming–based national park has prompted officials to shut down areas from tourists in case of landslides.

The Grand Teton National Park said in a statement: “The Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point areas are currently closed due to elevated potential for rockfall.

[...snip...]

If it was seismic activity beneath Grand Teton which caused the fissure, it could be a sign that Yellowstone is reawakening.

If the Wyoming volcano were to erupt an estimated 87,000 people would be killed immediately and two-thirds of the USA would immediately be made uninhabitable.

This is the Big One volcanic activity can be shown to have migrated to the north and east. It also periodically erupts and we are at the timetable for the next eruption.

It’s Trumps fault.

“If it was seismic activity beneath Grand Teton which caused the fissure...”

That would already have been known. I’m guessing it is a rock slab that has broken off of an existing cliff and has the risk of cascading broken rocks down. They’ll send ugys up on ropes with bars and maybe jackhammers to bring it down in a controlled manner.

I think this is the same talus field my kids and I climbed on years ago (before they put up the “no trespassing” signs). I still am amazed when I think of how my three and six year olds scrambled around on those boulders. Yeah - I suppose one of the boulders might have shifted and squished them - but they didn’t.

The continued British freakout over Yellowstone is comical. This is a crack, dozens of miles away. By all accounts, Yellowstone is no way even remotely ready to erupt.

Mistake!

Never ask for pictures of a crack.

Trump’s fault.

Obviously the very Earth itself is trying to vomit off the horrible Trump. Ghastly things await us if we do not immediately put him in chains and consign him to the fire god.

two-thirds of the USA would immediately be made uninhabitable.

(Excerpt)

Pretty sure 2/3rds of the lands coming uninhabitable would kill more than a few million.

It also periodically erupts and we are at the timetable for the next eruption.

On geological timescales, yes. Could be tomorrow, could be 5,000 years from now. Either one is "imminent" in geological scales. In human scales though, can't be too worried about 5,000 years from now. So which is it? Problem is, nobody knows.

Actually, the Yellowstone Caldera is massive in size.

If it did blow out, there would be massive death and destruction.

About 3/4ths of the U. S. could be uninhabitable.

Planetary temperatures would be impacted seriously.

Fertile farmland could be very negatively impacted. The food supply could be threatened seriously.

I know it sounds as if it’s one of those “we’re all gonna die” situations we all laugh about, but this could be a possibility.

I bet if Yellowstone ever detonates in a cataclysmic explosion they’ll be able to hear it from Denver.

The initial deaths would be the result of poisonous gases and lava of course. But huge ammounts of ash would cover the other areas, rendering them useless for almost everything. Wouldn’t kill everyone right away but starvation would be a sure thing. Make no mistake, a full on eruption of Yellowstone has happened before and they know what it did. It will happen again and when it does it will be devastating. We can only hope that it’s not for another 1,000 years but one never knows.
