George H.W. Bush offered condolences on Friday after a cardiologist who previously treated the former president was killed in a drive-by shooting.
Bush, 94, issued a statement through his spokesman on Twitter after authorities said Dr. Mark Hausknecht was shot and killed by a fellow cyclist while riding near the Texas Children's Pavilion for Women in downtown Houston.
"Mark was a fantastic cardiologist and a good man," Bush said in the statement. "I will always be grateful for his exceptional, compassionate care. His family is in our prayers."
Bush spokesman Jim McGrath added that the nation's 41st president was "deeply saddened by the tragic circumstances."
A suspect in the shooting was described as a 20 to 30-year-old Hispanic man, but a motive has not yet been released by police, who say road rage could have been involved, according to CNN.
HPD Executive Assistant Chief Troy Finner said at a news conference Friday that Hausknecht's shooting was likely caught on city surveillance cameras.
"There are a lot of cameras so we're hoping we can get some footage of this and bring this violent criminal into custody, where he needs to be right away," he said, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Not so easy to shoot someone while riding such a contraption. Sounds like a professional hit.
Road rage? It sounds like a hate crime.
“fellow cyclist” That is a phrase loaded with implications. I doubt it would be used in a typical road rage incident involving cars . . . “fellow motorist?”

Racist, sexist, and ageist!!! Couldn’t they just say he was shot with a gun?!?
Victim = White. Perp = Person of Color.

About 40 years ago, a top surgeon at Tampa General was murdered while jogging. Witnesses said that a Cadillac drove across four lanes on this well traveled street. It ran over the median, jumped the curb and ran down the surgeon on the sidewalk. Then, without stopping, the Cadillac swerved back onto the road and sped away. Witnesses thought the hit looked like it was done on purpose. This is the surgeon who had operated on me only a month or so prior. No suspect was ever identified.
In this case, my first thought was to wonder if this guy had been targeted because he had operated on HWB. This is the sort of thing that might be provoked by the intemperate statements of Democratic politicians.
Unless somebody got video, which is doubtful, the chances of identifying the culprit are pretty slim; unless he becomes a serial killer.
Very strange.
Cyclists have enough trouble with car traffic, you'd think they'd cut fellow cyclists some slack.
So, I'm guessing this had other motives.

He was one of the top cardiac surgeons in the country.

Damned if I’d go bike riding in any big democrat city downtown. If another cyclist doesn’t get you then a motorist or pedestrian will either accidentally or on purpose.
Curious that you mention that, was my first thought upon reading the article. They've been known to get around on bicycles.
