White House readies plan for $12 billion in emergency aid to farmers [shortened]

The U.S. Agriculture Department on Tuesday plans to announce a $12 billion package of emergency aid for farmers caught in the midst of President Trump’s escalating trade war, two people briefed on the plan said, the latest sign that growing tensions between the United States and other countries will not end soon.

Trump ordered Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to prepare a range of options several months ago, amid complaints from farmers that their products faced retaliatory tariffs from China and other countries. The new package of government assistance funds will be announced Tuesday and is expected to go into effect by Labor Day.

The aid package is expected to target soybean farmers, dairy farmers, and pork producers, among others. White House officials hope it will quiet some of the unease from farm groups, but the new plan could revive debates about taxpayer-funded bailouts and the degree to which Trump’s trade strategy is leading to unforeseen costs.

China will be hurt far worse and much sooner than this. And, China will also have to contend with social unrest as their domestic industries are hit and their banking system is further strained.

China doesn't have elections in three and a half months.

We must stay the course. Our economy is very strong right now. Now is the perfect time to rebalance the trade.

Apparently pork and soybean producers aren't seeing things the way you do.

The money they lose on foreign transactions will be more than made up for by increased domestic consumption.

So then why the $12B?

“”””””””””Farmers. The most rock-ribbed, solid Patriotic Conservatives you will ever find.

Until you threaten their favorite subsidy. Then it’s katy-bar-the-door.

I know, I used to sell to them.”””””””””””””

I come from generations of farmers in North Dakota. Church going, apple pie and as conservative as can be. Until an election comes around.
Promise good subsidies and you can be a democrat Senator for life.

You going to double your consumption of soybeans and pork chops?

Well, if the Chinamen aren't eating them, we'll have to take up the slack. Remember, too, that if demand goes down, prices will go down too, and that will encourage consumption. A win-win proposition for all concerned!

The long term benefit to the nation will be worth this cost.

I'm sure that's how that politically protected class feels.

Shall we give Federal funds to every business with a disrupted supply chain?

The funding still has to come from Congress. I doubt that there is a majority in either house willing to pass this.

Go down this path and every industry hurt by the trade war will come to Trump with their hand out.

Whirlpool just had a big earnings miss, partially blamed on high steel costs due to tariffs.

Looking forward to sending them some of my tax dollars soon.

Because we like farmers.

Except, of course, for the producer who is faced with losing money on every bushel he grows or pig he raises. The end result will be higher prices as supply decreases when the farmers go belly up. No pun intended.

Why not then donate the excess that can’t be sold to countries where folks are starving until playing field is leveled. When that happens you might end up selling even more of your produce to China.

= less than 2% of the population.

There are more gays and trannys than there are farmers.

I don't. Farming is the ghetto corner of the economy. It is low tech, for the most part brainless activity, low value added and the biggest employer of illegal labor. I have zero respect for the industry.

Perhaps, but I would assume the last thing we would want to do is imitate Obama in anything. This may not be on the same scale - yet - but #12 billion here, $12 billion there, soon you're talking real money.
