Facial-recognition cameras at bridge and tunnel toll plazas across the city are already scanning drivers’ visages and feeding them into databases to catch suspected criminals, Gov. Andrew Cuomo revealed Friday.
“When it reads that license plate, it reads it for scofflaws . . . [but] the toll is almost the least significant contribution that this electronic equipment can actually perform,” Cuomo said at a press conference outside the Queens Midtown Tunnel.
“We are now moving to facial-recognition technology, which takes it to a whole new level, where it can see the face of the person in the car and run that technology against databases.
“Because many times a person will turn their head when they see a security camera, so they are now experimenting with technology that just identifies a person by their ear, believe it or not,” he continued.
The tech is being tested at the RFK/Triborough Bridge and was switched on at Queens Midtown Tunnel and Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel Friday, according to the Governor’s Office.

Lil'Andy (the Mini-Sphachime) thinks that this 'facial recognition' technology is the bees-knees for law enforcement in catching fugitive criminals ... excepting, (of course), any 'criminal' of color, or of female gender, or of children (under 18, be they gang members), or of any illegal immigrant ... (remember that the lil'Sphachime considers New York 'a Sanctuary State')
Even the ACLU weighed in on this and stated that it's unconstitutional ... but of course, as always, the ACLU has the right position but for the wrong reasons:
“Facial-recognition software is notoriously inaccurate when it comes to identifying people of color, women and children, leading to the possibility of people being mistakenly arrested or erroneously monitored,” NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman said in a statement.
Geee .. thank you so much Donna of the NYCLU, I feel so much better now that as a white male I'll be the only one targeted ....
The state Department of MotorVehicles already uses facial-recognition software to catch people committing identity theft and fraud and has some 16 million photos in its databases, according to an August 2017 release from the Governor’s Office.
Geee wizz ... *only* 16 million photos in its database ??? That would encompass the entire population of New York State !!!

Catching criminals is good. I did not like “1984” nor “Atlas Shrugged.” In those two novels “The State” defined whom a criminal was or was not.
This is a very bad idea. I would far prefer a few criminals not be identified than all defined as criminals by “The State” identified. Rarely do I agree with the ACLU.

Yesterday I had lunch with a buddy in a Japanese restaurant with a first-day-on-the-job Japanese waiter. He kept mixing up our orders; giving me my buddy’s order. He seemed flustered so I said, “Oh, don’t sweat it. All us Caucasians look alike. We know that.”
I would wear an Andy Cuomo mask as I pass the toll plaza.

I won’t have a long chinwag about it but I agree.
The People with the power crack down on the common folks and they go scot free.
I tread, lightly here just not to reveal means or methods, but if you are gonna show your hand to bust me, I want that same technology applied to YOU.
