The Whiskeytown fire has gotten out of control. Huge walls of fire have now rolled through the western portions of the city of Redding, CA that has a population of around 90,000. There are reports of Fire Tornados ripping through neighborhoods. The Sacramento River was breached. Evacuations on going. Mass confusion. Firefighters have stopped working to fire and have go to a life saving mode to rescue those that they can. Entire neighborhoods are gone. No estimate on the number of homes lost right now. Redding Police and Shasta County Sheriff's Department can not pinpoint road closures as the fire is moving too fast. Redding Electric Untily has cut power to ensure line viabilty.
Fire is around 29,000 acres and six percent contained down from ten percent earlier.
So far the fire has not breeched Highway 5 but is approaching it from the west. #CARRFire
Agreed
Bump
May God protect the firefighters and others.
I had no idea this was going on. Haven’t seen much of any TV in days.
Thanks. We just heard from my sister-in-law and her house survived. Many in her subdivision didn’t.
I wish Id known that so I could have added to the reasons I gave her.
Thank you, SE Mom!
I am actually working in Alaska but my wife is at our home in Redding. She, her mom and her aunt have evacuated to a friend's house and are safe for now. But the way this fire is growing, and still un-contained, she may have to move again, soon.
Thanks!
Prayers for the victims, I read that a Great-Grandmother and her two grand-kids died in their home.
Redding is also being flanked to the north and the south.
Not good
A daisy cutter would knock down the trees and put the fuel on the ground. It’s still going to burn.
I’m relieved to know she’s safe! I haven’t seen you in ages, hope you’re doing well up there in Alaska.
I know some folks who went through the wine country fires last year. What a hardy bunch you NorCal people are. And lots of conservatives:)
This fire is just beyond belief, doubling in size each day and as you said- not predictable. Firemen saying they’ve never seen the likes of it.
I am praying.
Also just read on Twitter the Win-River Casino is evacuating.
Any idea what started the fire?
Somebody trying to drive on a flat tire. Sparks from the rim lit grass on fire. It was 300 acres before first fire truck showed up.
Yeah, this fire started some spot fires south of town so now there are fires to the south, west and north of Redding. It’s like a flanking maneuver... battle of the bulge.
Just hope Redding doesn’t get crushed in between.
Oh, Golly — I went to the link — 2 children and their great-grandmother killed in the fire.
Prayers and tears for them...
A daisy cutter would blow out a lot of the fire, lower the fuel supply of trees to the ground, and force up a lot of dirt that would cover some of the downed trees. Anything is better than having a 75-100 ft high wall of burning trees who embers and branches can fall or be blown many years away onto unburnt vegetation.
The Thomas fire (not even a year ago) spread even faster. It was up to 115,000 acres in 3 days. But that said, the Carr fire is trying hard to keep up. :-(
Usually made by the fire marshal assigned as the fire commander to that specific fire. Often the result of when the conditions are too dangerous for fire fighters to be on the fire lines.
When I was a teen I attended forestry camp one summer in Gainsville, Fl. They talked about the entire fire containment process. One of the last steps is “fire bombing” - the use of air burst explosives to try and blow out the fire. This fire maybe approaching that decision point.
