French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday he viewed talks between US President Donald Trump and EU Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker as useful, but he was not in favor of a vast new trade deal between the European Union and the United States.
Europe and France never wanted a trade war, and the talks yesterday were therefore useful in as far as they helped scale back any unnecessary tension, and working to bring about an appeasement is useful, the French leader said after a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Madrid.
But a good trade discussion can only be done on a balanced, reciprocal basis, and in no case under any sort of threat, Macron said. In this regard, we have a number of questions and concerns that we will clarify.
Macron said he was not in favor of us launching a vast trade agreement, along the lines of the TTIP, because the current context does now allow for that, referring to a transatlantic free-trade deal which stalled two years ago.

Amen bro.
Well that’s just too bad, Manny Macaroni.
Exactly. That’s why Trump must use tariffs.
Can’t get any more balanced than no tariffs.
First clear indication that Trump negotiated a big win for the USA!
“Cant get any more balanced than no tariffs.”
They have a 19% VAT which raises the price of all their goods. They used tariffs to balance out the price of American goods. This means they will have to lower their tax and that’s what pays for all that socialism.
They’re accustomed to having the US co-opted internally so it can’t use its massive power against them.
Losing control of the most powerful nation ever, and then finding yourself in the crosshairs to some extent, must be a very scary thing. The cabal has some nervy figureheads who will continue to exude arrogance, but the spate of unexpected resignations and ‘suicides’ imply crumbling morale.
“””””Europe and France never wanted a trade war,”””””
Too late, dickhead. President Trump gave you an offer and you ignored him. As always the French will lose. They are good at it.
If France was independent of the EU, it wouldnt be bound by deals you dont like Mr. Macron.
Exactly!
France decided to become a subject to the EU and relinquished its sovereignty.
Funny how he’s coming out with this stuff while meeting with Spain’s new socialist prez.
Waiting for the Free Traitors to check in.
More like they didn’t want it revealed that they were fomenting a covert trade war. They certainly wanted a trade war and for the USA to surrender.
That happened way back in 1951, when the EU was called the European Coal and Steel Community. Mind you, de Gaulle was a vehement opponent to the notion, but nobody listened to him.
Why should we care about that?
Well, the curious thing is that the 28 nations of the EU gave the Commission all authority over trading and talks....years ago. Merkel’s orders to Juncker was to resolve this for the sake of Germany, and that’s what he’s doing.
France can get all peeved but this is the job of the EU now. France and the rest of the countries might as well dismiss their trade agencies because they have no authority...it’s all with the EU.
“Why should we care about that?”
I am not saying we should care about it. It helps to understand why the other side is taking one position versus another position. It also explains why just demanding parity in tariffs is a hard position for the EU to take. They are taxing the sh*t out of their manufacturers, which, of course, increases the cost of their products. This is where they get the money to maintain all their “free” stuff given to the non-workers. If they take that stuff (entitlements) away, they can expect to get voted out of office and replaced by politicians who promise to keep the gravy flowing. A short term win on tariffs could lead to a long term loss on everything else. Trump’s job is to create a win/win, or at least a live-with/live-with.
There is probably plenty of room to move inside the EU economy that will benefit America. It’s up to both sides to find that space and use it. It just helps to understand where the other side is coming from.
