The question then is what happened? Was he offered ‘arrangements’ he could not refuse or what? When a person radically changes temperament and philosophy there is generally a very bad reason for it.

Just don’t know. He and his wife split up, and she died very soon after. Then seeing how nobody could get into a debate unless they were an approved GOP/DNC candidate I think embittered him. Also, he was still a sane guy when he made his dope arguments, but long time GOP “friends” turned on him hard and in a fairly insulting manner. That hit him pretty hard. I can’t say for sure, but I think a couple of things like that kinda turned him in a bad direction.
In 2016 he was unrecognizable from his old self. Also he had several very angry outbursts.
He made a bundle in construction (Big J), but his wife Dee was the real brains of the outfit. He was very athletic, and when she developed a condition (perhaps MS) he threw her over for a Santa Fe hardbody. She died not long after. He’s an egotistical a-hole.
My wife used to know him when she did the triathlon thing in NM in the 80’s. And Earl, his daddy, told me at the Furrow’s lumberyard on Montgomery Ave in the 90’s, the “He doesn’t have any idea what he’s doing.”
I agree. I used to like him a lot when he was Governor. Ever since he joined the Losertarian Party, he's gone off the deep end. The last straw for me is when he named big government RINO William Weld as his "Libertarian" running mate.
Gary Johnson seems to be taking a page out of the Bob Barr playbook.
