Data from numerous ObamaCare expansion states reveal that, if new enrollees are not required to work, they will not workat all. Based on recent research, this conclusion bodes ill for Idaho should Medicaid expansion pass in November.
A new report authored by the nonpartisan Foundation for Government Accountability asserts that more than half of Medicaid expansion enrollees across the country dont have jobs. FGA said of the 12.4 million Medicaid expansion enrollees nationwide, 6.8 million are not working.
FGA says 70 percent of the Medicaid-expansion enrollees in Illinois arent working, the highest percentage of the dozen states surveyed. Of Idahos neighbors, Montana and Nevada have high percentages of Medicaid enrollees not having a job, near 60 percent each.
Released last month, The FGA report, ObamaCare Isnt Working, concludes, With no work requirement or time limit, ObamaCare effectively transformed Medicaida program originally intended to serve the elderly and disabledinto a new welfare trap for able-bodied adults. New data from more than a dozen ObamaCare expansion states reveal that, if expansion enrollees are not required to work, they will notat all.
Medicaid expansion proponents were quick to highlight what they consider flaws in the FGAs methodology. A Robert Wood Johnson Foundation researcher contends FGAs research doesnt consider individuals who might be exempt from work requirements. Said individuals might not be working because theyre involved in qualifying activities, such as job searches, training, and volunteer activities, say the researcher and other FGA detractors.

They’re living to the terms of the program, which is insidiously crafted to sap courage.
No doubt. Why our elected officials, facing huge liabilities at both the state & federal level, will continue with these insane policies is beyond me. Either they have no common sense or they’re deliberately trying to destroy the country.
They're using false premises to try to prevent a race war, and, as with all false premises, they have to keep escalating until the whole project collapses.
Meanwhile those of us paying extremely high Obamacare tax premiums are struggling to make ends meet.
Some kind of meaningful occupational coaching should be needed unless dealing with drastic disability. I’m not so hard nosed as to say throw everybody unbuffered upon the fickle business world (which itself suffers government imposed dislocations due to things like farm support and H1B techies) but there surely is a middle ground. The FDR era frankly created makework, which was at least a place holder for morale.
You mean that if you give people food, a home, and medical care, they won’t work too - at least not on the books? I’m shocked!
Seems like when you walk in the door to apply for the Medicare deal....there’s a side-door into the unemployment office and you are given a data sheet to fill out and show you applied to a minimum of four jobs every month (even part-time). To make it interesting....you’d go and require the guy to either work, or to be in some county/district office area for 8 hours each day, and occupying their space unless you have a health condition.
Are they sure on this? My guess is that a lot of the medicaid recipients are working, mostly under the table, and just aren’t informing the medicaid administrators.
Its simple they want the votes of these people!
Make work maybe but at least something was produced.
Probably would not merit anything these days.
Huh? Vague comment.
The picture is further clouded by the fact that some of these people DID work and may be wondering why they can’t be retired now.
What percentages of the enrollees are dual eligible geezers? We can’t expect those folks to go back to work. And in my Upstate NYS neck of the woods, a large percentage of our Medicaid caseload is dual eligible seniors.
And having it be a political question throws another helping of dirt into the mix.
It won’t for long. This level of spending is unsustainable.
Though seniors hiding assets is still an issue, too. And one that WILL have to be addressed.
I’m not sure why rich seniors would settle for mere Medicaid rather than a pricier concierge service, though.
I’m not following that. Is Medicaid less expensive for the recipient than Medicare?
