Russia warns of 'horrible' conflict if Georgia joins NATO

MOSCOW – An attempt by NATO to incorporate the former Soviet republic of Georgia could trigger a new, "horrible" conflict, Russia's prime minister said Tuesday in a stern warning to the West marking 10 years since the Russia-Georgia war.

Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview with the Kommersant daily broadcast by Russian state television that NATO's plans to eventually offer membership to Georgia are "absolutely irresponsible" and a "threat to peace."

Medvedev was Russia's president during the August 2008 war, which erupted when Georgian troops tried unsuccessfully to regain control over the Moscow-backed breakaway province of South Ossetia and Russia sent troops that routed the Georgian military in five days of fighting.

The Russian army was poised to advance on the Georgian capital, but Medvedev rolled it back, accepting a truce mediated by the European Union.

After the war, Georgia entirely lost control of both South Ossetia and another separatist region, Abkhazia. Russia has strengthened its military presence in both regions and recognized them as independent states, but only a few countries have followed suit.

The European Union on Tuesday reiterated its "firm support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders" and lamented the Russian military presence in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

In a show of support for Georgia, foreign ministers of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, and a Cabinet member from Ukraine, visited Tbilisi Tuesday, urging Russia to withdraw its troops from Abkhazia and South Ossetia. "Nowadays no country can change the borders of another country by force," said Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz.

“Fear of invasion is in the Russian DNA.”

Unfortunately, Provocative offensive and illegal invasion and annexation is even stronger in the Russian DNA.

Peace only through Strength.

The Russians are as rogue as Iran at this point. Their defense of Crimea is that people in Crimea voted to join Russia. Well the sovereign nation of Georgia votes to join NATO.

So, give back Crimea and we don’t take Georgia. No deal...welcome Georgia.

[No. That isn’t what I said. But then the defining earmarks of neoconartists are stupidity and duplicity, and it is impossible to tell where one leaves off and the other begins.]

If NATO isn’t going to invade Russia, then where is the offense? I’m referring to conventional definitions of what an offense is, not Russia’s definition of it, where not submitting to Russian rule is a cause for Russian conquest and annexation.

” Agreed. Putin should have accepted Ukrainian and Georgian independence rather than trying to annex them using the age old tactic of claiming persecuted ethnic minorities. Ukraine and Georgia wouldn’t be rushing to join NATO if he simply respected their independence. “

That’s the rub. The Russians are out neo-conning the neo-cons. They offer no carrot and nobody really likes them, so they have to satisfy their appetite with expansion.

I predict if the US and NATO hesitate, Russia will take all of Georgia. With no NATO, we will do nothing. With Nato, the Russians will do nothing, despite their dire threats.

“then maybe we need to go in and kill Putin and annihilate Russia as a nation before they go nuclear over some other idiotic claim”

Go get that done sweetheart.

You’ll have about 11 Freepers willing to help you.

“Georgia is a sovereign state and it’s none of Russia’s f***ing business what another sovereign state does.”

And it’s none of our business even if they did.

If they could have done it, they would have done it.

The Russian army is just not the steamroller of Stalin Soviet days.

Just a seedy Cold War flea market bogged down in Syria and Ukraine.

Those statements, while mostly true, do not explain what interest the US has in preventing Russia from doing as they please with Georgia.

I have seen some really entertaining video of driving in Russia but had no idea it extended to their shipyards. Really lousy parking I guess.

In the long run, we will either stop their expansion or be conquered by them. Risk is a deceptively simple game, but it captures the essence of empire building - the more land you capture, the more resources you get and the easier it is to capture your next slice of land. Russia is a massive country, almost the size of Canada and the US combined, with huge amounts of resources. We don’t need it getting any bigger.

Nothing in the Caucasus is worth the dusty bones of a single Texas infantryman, with apologies to Otto von Bismarck, who said it first (with slightly different words).

So what?

What does that have to do with the USA?

Not my circus. Not my monkeys.

The expired Soviet navy in Murmansk and other old Cold War harbors is a toxic/radioactive waste dump we've been helping clean up since the 90's.

“In the long run, we will either stop their expansion or be conquered by them.”

Surely you’re joking.

- Every country that has tried to conquer the world has failed.
- Every country that has tried had a plausible chance of success.
Every country that has tried had announced their intent years in advance.

None of those three conditions apply to Russia.

Nice shot at Neocon warmongering though.

You’re the one making the argument that Putin is a madman with nuclear weapons who will start WW3 unless he gets his way.

And so you bend over for him on Georgia and Ukraine.

What about Poland? Latvia? Lithuania? Estonia? He wants them back, too. He wants to take back all of the slave states that used to belong to the USSR.

At what point do you stand up to him?

Myself, I’d rather stop the son of a bitch in Ukraine or Georgia before he starts a real war.

If Mexico allowed Russia to set up shop in Mexico, what do you think we would do?

Laugh as the Mexicans steal the Russians blind.

Then Megan beat me to it: Laugh while the Mexicans rob them blind like the Cubans did.

And you might ask Venezuela just how much that Russian military aid has helped them too...
