Reports of overdoses continue to skyrocket as the day progresses. A Public health alert has been issued.
NEW HAVEN, CT Emergency crews are responding to a mass overdose at the New Haven Green Wednesday. Overdoses have now spread to other parts of the city as well and are pushing emergency crews to the limit.
Overdose reports continue to come in rapid fire; there were two additional reports during the span of a short late morning press conference. The city has declared a public health alert after more than 30 overdoses.
A local man believed to be connected to at least some of the overdoses was arrested. He was arrested on a violation of probation warrant and had drugs on him, said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman. He is being classified as a person of interest in the investigation.
Victim symptoms ranged from nausea to respiratory distress and unconsciousness, said New Haven Fire Chief John Alston Jr. at a press conference.
There have been no reported fatalities. Victims come from a wide range of ages and demographics, Alston said.
Calls started coming in around 8 a.m. regarding multiple overdoses on the Green.
The exact drug or drugs that lead to the overdose aren't known at this time or whether every overdose victim had the same batch. Some medical evidence suggests that it is potentially a mixture of synthetic cannabinoid K2, hallucinogen PCP and some kind of opioid, said Yale EMS Medical Director Sandy Bogucki.
High doses of Narcan at the hospital have helped some of the patients.
Illnesses are largely non-life threatening and concentrated to a portion of the New Haven Green, said city Emergency Operations Deputy Director Rick Fontana.
Police are dealing with the sale and origin investigation portion of the investigation.
"Any physical evidence and gathered intelligence, including patient testimony is considered when trying to track down and arrest those who deal illegal drugs in our city," said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman.
There is a large contingent of police, firefighters and EMS on the Green as the medical emergency is sorted out.
My daughter is a paramedic in Western Ma. They get a lot of frequent flyers. After a while they give it their full legal obligation of care. But they are not enthusiastic about it.
30 at a whack would really strain the system. I would hate to explain triage to their parents.
Down here in Maryland, we have hundreds overdosing and the EMT people are over burdened. Recently a couple were brought back from thei FOURTH overdose. Ridiculous.
David Hartman?
Agreed. Let their demise be a lesson to others who might consider using illegal drugs.
I’m not an expert, but I was under the impression that junkies figured out how not to OD.
When I was studying this back in the early ‘70s, overdoses and anaphylactic shock were lumped in together.
There’s no way to guard against shock, but how come junkies are suddenly unable to regulate their dosage?
“Legalize drugs. They have the right to be stupid.”
Manufactured substances? Nope.
If we regulate the creation of prescription medication, then this category of drugs doesn’t get a pass.
I’ve said it many times before and I will say it again: you will not get the drug problem in this country under control until you start putting the drug dealers to death, preferably by public executions.
How many deaths will now be caused by these New Haven poison dealers?
We used to at least put them in prison for life, but then Obama let many of them out on the street again as “non-violent criminals.”
The New Haven green is a cesspool. Doesn’t matter what day it is, or the time of year. It is permanently occupied by the dregs of humanity.
Legalize their drugs? Not as long as taxpayers are on the hook for their stupidity.
AND stop wasting NARCAN On them as well.
Then give My and the other good GP Doctors back the power to Treat Pain Patients.
PING!!!
Ah, but this is a new world. They have parties where one person stays sober with the narcan. They can revive anyone who ODs.
The funny part is they are all junkies. So the designated Narcan person waits for the rest to pass out. Then they get high.
What is this world coming to if you cannot trust junkies? //sarc
CT folks like to think that....
They STILL think they run the place.
I see you’ve been to the fine city. :-)
Let them overdose and die. That is the only to stop the problem. These people will eventually kill themselves and ruin their loved ones lives in the process.
I actually work EMS in New Haven and deal with these people with great frequency. Luckily I went fishing today.
I have a plan to solve that crap one overdose they get warned to stop happens again one bullet in the head problem solved.
How many Rounds of Ammo equals one EMS Ride ? 1000 ? 5000 ?
But now you have the possibility of a lovely new governor. Aren’t you lucky? ;-)
Why would someone buy “K2”, a synthetic cannabis, when actual pot is so easily available?
Yale emergency is literally 60 seconds away
